MILLIONS ON GOVERNMENT PAYROLL

In 1948, the average American family paid 2% of their income to the Federal Government. Today, the average American family pays 24% of their income to the Federal Government. State and local taxes just about double the burden of working Americans. Where does all the money go?

More than 18 million people work for government at all levels. Almost 3 million work for the federal government, more than 15 million work for state and local governments. This is more than work in all the factories in the United States.

Additional millions receive government checks as their main income or as an income supplement. The retired depend on Social Security payments. The disabled receive Supplemental Security Income. The old and disabled who are dependent on the government face real tragedy in the case of a Federal Government Bankruptcy.

See "FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HEADED FOR BANKRUPTCY"

Millions of farmers receive government subsidies through the Price Support programs, the Soil Bank, and Agricultural Export program.

Millions of workers work for companies with government contracts:

from defense and aerospace industries to those who supply notebooks and pencils to public schools. Others work for corporations that receive government subsidies.

23 million Americans receive Food Stamps. This includes millions of working Americans whose dependence on government comes in the form an income supplement rather than a direct monetary payment.

Libertarians call for serious cuts in government power. We seek a society in which most people have financial independence, and can pay their expenses out of the proceeds of their work.

Dependence on Government is an unnatural condition. As the Federal Government heads into bankruptcy, such dependence is another source of insecurity.
