Gene Berman for Congress

FREE TRADE VS
INTERNATIONAL REGULATION

Free Enterprise has made America rich. Free Trade with other countries is the only policy consistent with Free Enterprise principles. Restricting trade restricts the choices of consumers, and invites retaliatory trade restrictions by other countries.

Trade restrictions harm American industry by limiting access to raw materials. Limiting steel imports drives up the cost of manufacturing products made from steel. Trade restrictions protect American companies from international competition; Free Trade forces American companies to be competitive.

The North American Free Trade Agreement has not brought about Free Trade. Instead NAFTA has created 32 new government agencies and many new regulations. NAFTA empowers the Federal Government to regulate U.S. companies doing business in Mexico. NAFTA empowers the Canadian government to expand regulations on U.S. exports to Canada.

Former Governor Jerry Brown has warned that NAFTA lays the groundwork for an International Government. The General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs takes us closer to World Government. GATT establishes a World Trade Organization with power to impose sanctions on countries that violate GATT regulations.

As a Congressman, I will promote Free Trade by opposing restrictions on trade, by the Federal Government or by Treaty. I favor American withdrawal from NAFTA and from the World Trade Organization.
