A Republic, or an Empire?

Which way for America?

We face a stark choice, one that no major candidate for the presidency has articulated, let alone faced: do we want an empire, or do we want our old republic back?

Seven years of constant warfare have taken their toll on our free and democratic institutions, as the power of the presidency has waxed and our own civil liberties have waned. The costs of empire, we are beginning to learn, are more than just losses on the battlefield: among the casualties may be our unique form of government and the very values we are supposedly fighting to preserve.

The Founders of the American nation feared militarism and its consequences, and for good reason. They saw how the European empire-builders abused not only their colonial subjects, but also their own citizens. The Founders resolved never to let that happen in America.

Yet it is happening.

Antiwar.com has been fighting for the republic since day one of our existence, and that remains our mission to this day. We're in a long-term battle to change American foreign policy, but we can't keep attacking the policies that hurt America unless you give till it hurts.

A republic – or an empire? You decide.

Sorry for the interruption.
