Who needs liberty when you got Bush?

Robert Higgs quotes John Quincy Adams concerning war in search of monsters:

“The fundamental maxims of [U.S] policy would insensibly change from liberty to force,” he said. America “might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit.”

Whose spirit would guide us then? It appears that it will be the combined ambitions of two armchair generals and a "finish-what-daddy-left" president.

Constitutionally obsessed

Some people these days. All they can think about is principles, traditions, precise definitions and that bloody Constitution. One such culprit is Rep. Ron Paul (R- TX) who is up-in-arms about the lack of evidence of Iraqi threats, poor public hearings, and legislative irresponsibility. What does he want, freedom, liberty... America? As if!

War on Villages

The village of Hajibirgit "is dead." Robert Fisk investigated the US Special Forces mission to this small Afghanistan village and what he documents is chilling: women tied up and imprisoned, money stolen, a village disarmed and left defenseless, and a "war on terror" tainted.

Skipping history class

The Middle East has never been known as an area of stability and peace, and Iraq is no exception. Eric Margolis summarizes the bloody and tumultuous history, hoping the president will listen. If not history, what did Baby Bush learn at Yale... besides how to snort white powder through a straw?

What.... Christian Zionists?

Just when you think that the US involvement (read funding, aiding and abetting) in Israel could get even deeper, some American Christians are funding the re-settlement of Jews in Israel. These self-labelled "Christian Zionists" believe that they are paving the way for Jesus' return and their path to heavenly assent. Or maybe these famously bigoted fundies just want to get rid of Jews. The easy way….

Sanction for terror

Charmaine Seitz suspects that as soon as the bombs drop in Iraq, the Israeli government will say: "They're doing it, why can't I?" "It" will include the terrorizing of the Palestinians and the removal of their leadership (as if they had any...). This should give new meaning to the concept of "riding coattails"….
