Posted May 11, 2002 Second to None I sometimes disagree with some of the articles you link to, but as both a news resource and an opinion resource, your site is second to none. For me, writing about Afghanistan, a day wouldn't be complete without checking out Antiwar.com. ~ Brendan O'Neill, Spiked-Online.com Invective of Armey I was flabbergasted to read the outrageous invective of our House majority leader Dick Armey, advocating an immediate instigation of regional (world) war by pressing his point that Israel should forcibly relocate the Palestinian population to some large section of desert somewhere else in the region. Flabbergasted. But then when I went to see the results of his incredible incendiary diatribe, what did I find? Nuthin. I have seen nothing in local media reports at all regarding this incredible insane blather. Could there have been an immediate quashing of reportage on this topic, directed by the cadre of far-right media owners? Who knows. But I am very surprised that this kind of lunacy received zero reportage. On the Mark Ever since Antiwar.Com came on the Internet, I became a regular reader. I specifically read all Justin Raimondo's columns. I am impressed by his intellectual power and ability to analyze political stands of all our entanglements everywhere. His fluid use of the English language is superb and his critical analysis of other journalists' output is always on the mark. Raimondo, Lew Rockwell, and Dr. Ron Paul seem to have the same view on many issues. I am grateful to Antiwar.Com for making me aware of the other two. Support Powell Here's an idea for marches and rallies that might garner more widespread support than the leftist antiwar events that have occurred so far. Support Colin Powell and protest against the Rumsfeld-Perle-Wolfowitz cabal. Colin Powell knows the US military should be used for true defense and counterattacking and not offensive preemptive attacks. He knows most Americans and most human beings want a foreign policy that minimizes the possibility of war. Suggestions for locations include the State Department, Pentagon, Whitehouse, and wherever else Colin Powell, Condeleeza Rice and other high-profile US Foreign Policy decision makers appear. I suppose the pro-Police State War Party won't allow marches and rallies to come as close to those buildings as during the '60s. The anti-USA-PATRIOT act coalition of real progressives and real conservatives could and should morph into a pro-peace foreign policy coalition. If enough of the current members of the domestic anti-Police State coalition also agree to add anti-Perpetual War Foreign Policy to their agenda, then that would be a huge leap forward for this country. Costa Rica Libertarians Just wanted to throw out a kudo to Justin for his great blasting of the War Street Journal, Fukuyama, Cato, and for stating in unequivocal terms that libertarianism is alive and well. I wanted to add a little tidbit that offers even more hope: In early February, Costa Ricans - who take their democracy very seriously -- elected 6 Libertarians to the 57-seat national assembly -- the equivalent of 45 House seats in the US! It would be ironic indeed if little, "insignificant" Costa Rica showed the rest of the world how freedom gets "done." Joke (More or Less) At the White House Correspondents Dinner last Saturday night Drew Carey told the following joke (more or less): "I really don't understand why they hate us. All we want to do is set up some hamburger joints in their countries, give them a chance to enjoy our cuisine, chain their children to sewing machines, maybe open a couple of airbases, set up a puppet government that will do anything we say. I just don't understand why they hate us." I think we should show our support to Drew for speaking truth to power in the best comedic tradition, especially as the networks have consigned his participation in the gala event to oblivion while re-broadcasting ad nauseum the President's attempt at humor and lauding to the sky the presence of someone named "Ozzy Osbourne." If you want to send Mr. Carey a grateful email, his show's website is www.drewcareyshow.com. Here's what I wrote him: "Thank you for your joke about why they hate us you told at the White House Correspondents Dinner. It took a lot of courage. You made a telling (and funny) point in the best tradition of Will Rogers and Mark Twain." |
