We get a lot of letters, and, up until now, haven't had the manpower to deal with posting them, let alone answering them. But that sad state of affairs is at an end with the inauguration of this "Backtalk" column, edited by Sam Koritz. Please send your letters to backtalk@antiwar.com. Letters may be edited for length (and coherence). Unless otherwise indicated, authors may be identified and letters may be reproduced in full.

The ICTY

The ICTY has proven to be a predominantly anti-Serb tribunal [and not] a proper instrument of justice. The U.S. is …opposed to the creation of the International Criminal Court, [which is] similar to this tribunal, for fear American troops may be prosecuted by leaders of foreign nations. Yet America is pledging not to attend the donors meeting in Paris later this week until Yugoslavia caves in and changes their government to allow for the extradition of Milosevic to the ICTY. [Editor's update: The Serbian government delivered Mr. Milosevic to The Hague. Yugoslavia's Deputy Prime Minister promised further cooperation with ICTY. American representatives did attend the donor conference, at which the US and European governments, and the World Bank, pledged the Yugoslavian government $1.28 billion dollars.]

With Macedonia, the EU is leading the charge, forcing Macedonia to negotiate with terrorists of the NLA. If Albanians need more rights there is a process – it's called democracy – and they have several political parties representing them in Macedonia. Anything otherwise is known as terrorism!

It is quite ironic that the EU, U.S. and NATO are punishing democratic nations like Yugoslavia and Macedonia in support of a kangaroo court in the ICTY and in support of armed thugs and terrorists in the NLA. What have we become?

A Gratified Royalist

[Nebojsa] Malic hit the nail right on the head; monarchies are exactly what the Balkans need. Only a head of state who is above the partisan political process, untainted by a Communist past, and connected to the region's traditional heritage can provide the morale boost that these countries deserve. And by the way, HRH Crown Prince Alexander did publicly oppose NATO's attack on his country. Unlike Mr. Malic, I believe he is eminently fit to reign, as are King Simeon, King Michael, and King Constantine.

We royalists spend a lot of time preaching to the choir, so it is always gratifying to see our views echoed from an unexpected source.

EU Debate

[Regarding Justin Raimondo's reply to Carl Haber's Backtalk letter, "Well-Intentioned Neo-Fascists":]

[Justin Raimondo] writes:

"The sixties-style leftists, …having failed to pull off their envisioned socialist revolution from below, are now intent on pulling it off 'from above' — that is, establishing a United Socialist States of Europe without a referendum (except in Ireland)."

…[Mr. Raimondo] fails to mention that in Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Spain, Holland and Belgium the great majority of citizens are in favor of the EU and have continually polled as such.

He writes:

"As a rising imperialist power, the EU is the greatest danger to peace since the end of the cold war. If my opposition to 'Red Europa' makes me a 'neo-fascist' in your lexicon, then please, sir, make the most of it."

…As far as the threat to peace goes, …rabid nationalism, religious fundamentalism, …an "us against them" mentality, countries and regions that seek to wall themselves off from the rest of the world, are historically responsible for the majority of wars. Uniting, practicing real democracy, federalizing smaller states and being tolerant of people with other skin colors, other religions and other origins – this is what avoids war… …Your opposition to a united Europe doesn't, in and of itself, make you a neo-fascist, but your arguments and your exaggerated hysteria certainly do.

~ Carl Haber

Taboo

[Justin Raimondo] will undoubtedly be smeared for [criticizing FDR]. One of the big reasons why Sen. Joe McCarthy was smeared, is that he wrote the book about General George Marshal, another Pearl Harbor traitor. I think it was entitled Why Not Victory. [It was entitled "America's Retreat from Victory."]
