On Tuesday, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky came to Washington promising to show the U.S. president “evidence” that Russia was helping Iran target U.S. military bases and other assets in the Middle East. This is part of what experts like Trita Parsi and George Beebe say is a new gambit by Zelensky not only to lock in U.S. support for its war with Russia, but create the conditions so that Washington will now see Russia as its enemy and have no choice but to fight it directly. My enemy is your enemy, your enemy is mine — Zelensky, in boasting about a Saturday Ukrainian attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea, seems all to eager to prove that dangerous dictum.
Scott Horton, longtime radio host and podcaster, director of the Libertarian Institute, editorial director of Antiwar.com, and author of several best selling books, including Enough Already, Fool’s Errand, and his latest, Provoked, joined me this week to talk about how this could take a dangerous turn and what Laura Loomer, the influencer known as both Trump whisperer and hatchet-woman, was doing in Ukraine in a self-described change of heart in support of Ukraine. It would seem that Loomer, one of the biggest cheerleaders for Israel and the war in Iran, is playing a role in this attempt to merge the wars, creating the conditions for what could be a battlefield expansion reminiscent of 1914.
We talk about this, as well as the desperation of war hawks like Mark Theissen, who believe there is still time for military victory and regime change in Iran (without boots on the ground!), despite depleting U.S. stockpiles (which Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth vehemently denies), and how Trump is stuck in a political (and military) quagmire of his own making — at the expense of the very working class he purported to champion.
