{"id":1033,"date":"2004-06-09T18:41:53","date_gmt":"2004-06-10T01:41:53","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2004-06-09T18:41:53","modified_gmt":"2004-06-10T01:41:53","slug":"their-eyes-are-drawn-to-empire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2004\/06\/09\/their-eyes-are-drawn-to-empire\/","title":{"rendered":"Their Eyes Are Drawn to Empire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I find it funny that the <a href=http:\/\/www.georgewbush.com\/>Bush campaign<\/a> has chosen to highlight the same Reagan speech I alluded to in <a href=http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/barganier\/?articleid=2773>my column today<\/a>; I find it downright hilarious that they titled the speech &#8220;Empire of Ideals.&#8221; What did Reagan say about empire in <a href=http:\/\/65.126.3.86\/reagan\/html\/reagan08_17_92.shtml>the speech<\/a>?<\/p>\n<ul>There was a time when empires were defined by landmass, subjugated peoples, and military might. But the United States is unique because we are an empire of ideals.<\/ul>\n<p>Hardly a ringing endorsement of the neocons&#8217; &#8220;Invade the World&#8221; project, especially given that Reagan was explicitly contrasting this &#8220;empire of ideals&#8221; with the military\/political aggression of the Soviet Union.
