{"id":1117,"date":"2004-07-05T16:32:23","date_gmt":"2004-07-05T23:32:23","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2004-07-05T16:32:23","modified_gmt":"2004-07-05T23:32:23","slug":"iraqi-children-come-and-go-iran-curious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2004\/07\/05\/iraqi-children-come-and-go-iran-curious\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraqi children come and go; Iran curious"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationclearinghouse.info\/\">Information Clearing House <\/a> has a link to a Der Spiegel report<br \/>\n <a href=\"http:\/\/www.informationclearinghouse.info\/article6430.htm\">&#8220;More Than 100 Children Imprisoned<\/a>, Report Of Abuse By U.S. Soldiers.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>When I first tried the link, it didn&#8217;t work, so I did a search on &#8220;100 children imprisoned.&#8221;<br \/>\nIt kicked out a story from April 8, 2003, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/News24\/World\/Iraq\/0%2C6119%2C2-10-1460_1344832%2C00.html\">&#8220;Iraqi child prisoners freed&#8221;<\/a>  and associated<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.command-post.org\/archives\/004630.html\">crowing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.madhoo.com\/archives\/002306.php \">peacenik-bashing<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Iran wants to know why, when Saddam faced the judge, no mention was<br \/>\nmade of the <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=564&#038;e=27&#038;u=\/nm\/20040704\/ts_nm\/iraq_iran_trial_dc_1\n\">1980-1988 war<\/a>, why the list of charges filed doesn&#8217;t include Iraq&#8217;s use of<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sg.news.yahoo.com\/040704\/1\/3lh3o.html\">chemical weapons<\/a> in that war.<\/p>\n<p>An obvious answer was provided by one of the ex-Iraqi <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intelmessages.org\/Messages\/National_Security\/Archives\/Archive_05\/wwwboard\/messages\/239.html\">generals interviewed <\/a> by<br \/>\nNewsweek in March, 2002:<\/p>\n<p>     &#8220;One general interviewed by NEWSWEEK made no bones about his use of<br \/>\n      chemical weapons. General al-Shamari commanded nine divisions in the<br \/>\n      Iran-Iraq War before he defected in 1986. (Now 56, he runs a small<br \/>\n      restaurant in northern Virginia.) He says he carried out Saddam\u2019s<br \/>\n      orders to gas the Iranians, firing chemical weapons from howitzers.<br \/>\n      The impact was devastating. &#8216;It created a state of chaos,&#8217; said<br \/>\n      al-Shamari. Given that he was miles from the target, how did he know<br \/>\n      that? From U.S. intelligence. &#8216;We got information from American<br \/>\n      satellites,&#8217; said al-Shamari.
