The extrajudicial killing of the former Libyan dictator ousted with the help of an eight-month bombing campaign was <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/for-us-gadhafis-death-a-laughing-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\">crudely celebrated by U.S. leaders<\/a> and prompted a speech from President Obama in which he <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/gadhafis-death-prompts-pro-arab-spring-lie-from-obama\/\" target=\"_blank\">misleadingly put himself on the side of the people in the Arab Spring<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>NATO has <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/nato-tentatively-planning-to-stop-bombing-libya\/\" target=\"_blank\">&quot;tentatively decided&quot; to stop launching airstrikes<\/a> in Libya following the death of Gadhafi, as U.S. leaders <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/18\/clinton-vows-millions-in-funding-for-new-libyan-regime\/\" target=\"_blank\">pledge aid<\/a> and attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/senators-push-for-major-us-role-in-post-gadhafi-libya\/\" target=\"_blank\">capitalize on the new NTC-led government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>When Leave Means Stay<\/b><\/p>\n<p>President Barack Obama announced that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/us-to-withdraw-from-iraq-by-december\/\" target=\"_blank\">all U.S. troops would leave Iraq by December<\/a>, in keeping with the 2008 Status of Forces Agreement. Billed as making good on his campaign promise to end the war, Obama actually had this decision forced on him after years of pressuring Iraq to allow thousands of troops past the deadline. An expanded diplomatic presence and thousands of mercenary soldiers will still remain, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/panetta-military-to-negotiate-new-iraq-role-after-pullout\/\" target=\"_blank\">contradicting the notion<\/a> that there will actually be a &quot;full withdrawal.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Obama referred to a new relationship with Iraq, presumably characterized by large packages of economic and military aid to abusive governments and armies in exchange for conformity to U.S. interests, as understood by Washington national security planners.<\/p>\n<p><b>Obama\u2019s New War of Choice in Uganda<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Obama\u2019s decision to send 100 combat troops to Uganda to fight the terrorist group the Lord\u2019s Resistance Army, while unexpected, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/15\/new-war-of-choice-in-uganda-follows-familiar-foreign-police-doctrine\/\" target=\"_blank\">follows a familiar foreign policy doctrine<\/a>. Here, Obama is countering a Ugandan group on behalf of the Ugandan regime, whose forces can now better focus on waging a proxy war in Somalia for the U.S. Officials <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/16\/us-troops-wont-be-fighting-uganda-president-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\">claim<\/a> U.S. troops won\u2019t be engaged in combat, although that is unlikely, considering America\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/17\/uganda-deployment-latest-move-in-a-long-standing-policy-of-escalation\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous interventions in that region<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>John Glaser <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/john-glaser-on-rt-talking-uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\">appeared on Russia Today to discuss the intervention in Uganda<\/a>, warning that &quot;this has all the ingredients of a prolonged military quagmire.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><b>Double the Death, Double the Fun<\/b><\/p>\n<p>American and Afghan troops <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/us-afghan-soldiers-allegedly-forced-civilians-onto-mine-filled-roads\/\" target=\"_blank\">forced civilians to march ahead of them on roads believed to have been filled with bombs<\/a> and land mines planted by insurgents, according to allegations from villagers in southern Afghanistan. An investigation is under way, and the charge, if true, would be a war crime. Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/17\/karzai-seeks-answers-for-deadly-nato-raid-on-afghan-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">three people were killed and two detained<\/a> in a botched U.S. night raid on the home of a former Afghan senator, an incident Hamid Karzai is asking to be investigated. In a new milestone, the U.S. death toll in Afghanistan is now <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/17\/us-deaths-in-afghanistan-obama-doubles-entire-bush-era-total\/\" target=\"_blank\">more than double<\/a> that during President Bush\u2019s tenure, with 1,153 in just 33 months of Obama\u2019s term. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/nato-115-killed-in-afghanistans-kunar-province\/\" target=\"_blank\">dramatically<\/a> escalated its <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/18\/us-escalates-assault-on-haqqanis-insurgents-to-no-avail\/\" target=\"_blank\">attacks on the Haqqani network<\/a> in eastern Afghanistan, as top U.S. officials <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/sen-levin-us-should-threaten-pakistan-over-terror-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\">threaten Pakistan<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/clinton-threatens-pakistan-with-unilateral-moves-over-haqqani-network\/\" target=\"_blank\">not doing that work for them<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><b>Assorted News from the Empire<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Soldiers in Afghanistan will soon be able to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/19\/new-drone-can-be-stored-in-soldiers-backpacks\/\" target=\"_blank\">launch drones from their backpacks<\/a>, as drone technology advances faster than the law can keep up. <\/li>\n<li>Five U.S.-supported Colombian soldiers were accused of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/colombian-soldiers-accused-of-killing-civilians-to-boost-kill-counts\/\" target=\"_blank\">murdering two civilian farmers<\/a> and disguising them to boost enemy kill counts. <\/li>\n<li>Israel <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/netanyahu-offers-partial-settlement-freeze-for-talks\/\" target=\"_blank\">offered Palestinians a &quot;partial&quot; freeze of settlement construction<\/a> if the PA returns to peace talks, signaling unease at the PA\u2019s measures at the UN. <\/li>\n<li>Scores more have been killed in Syria as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/17\/at-least-41-killed-as-clashes-escalate-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">clashes between protesters and Syrian forces<\/a> continue to escalate. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/21\/violence-flares-as-un-security-council-urges-yemens-saleh-to-resign\/\" target=\"_blank\">Violence flared in Yemen<\/a> as Ali Abdullah Saleh rejected a U.N. resolution calling for his resignation, as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/18\/yemeni-nobel-laureate-demands-saleh-be-prosecuted-for-war-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\">some are worried the deal will grant immunity<\/a> for Saleh\u2019s crimes.<\/li>\n<li>Anonymous U.S. officials are disseminating statements about Iran\u2019s Quds Force being &quot;increasingly aggressive,&quot; as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/20\/obama-admin-scales-up-tensions-ignoring-mistrust-of-alleged-iran-plot\/\" target=\"_blank\">Obama increases tensions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What\u2019s New at the Blog?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Sapienza highlighted supposedly &quot;progressive&quot; U.S. Senate candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/17\/elizabeth-warren-bomb-bomb-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Warren\u2019s hawkish views on Iran<\/a>. Similarly, Matt Barganier posted supposedly &quot;progressive&quot; blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/kevin-drum-perpetual-skeptic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Drum\u2019s consistent subservience<\/a> to pro-war leaders, as well as his magazine\u2019s strange excitement about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/whats-the-opiate-of-the-masses-again\/\" target=\"_blank\">&quot;secularizing&quot; the military<\/a>. Justin Raimondo approvingly cited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/17\/the-ron-paul-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ron Paul\u2019s plan cut $1 trillion<\/a> from the federal budget. Scott Horton pointed out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/what-neoconservatives-think\/\" target=\"_blank\">rabid racism and violence of Rachel Abrams<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>John Glaser documented the Afghan war\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/16\/killing-children-in-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\">deadly effect on children<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/17\/ignorance-plays-in-the-politics-of-the-imperial-plebiscite\/\" target=\"_blank\">Herman Cain\u2019s further display of foreign policy ignorance<\/a>, Paul Pillar\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/17\/when-atrocity-curbing-is-not-what-it-seems\/\" target=\"_blank\">all too welcoming attitude<\/a> to Obama\u2019s Uganda intervention, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/two-us-soldiers-killed-in-afghanistan-drone-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">drone war\u2019s friendly fire<\/a>, and how Obama was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/obama-supported-child-soldiers-before-he-was-against-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">for child soldiers before he was against them<\/a>. Glaser also railed against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/i-am-a-decorated-veteran\/\" target=\"_blank\">the free-speech-killing Stolen Valor Act<\/a>, the Obama administration\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/like-father-like-son-murdering-awlakis-16-year-old-son\/\" target=\"_blank\">murder of Anwar al-Awlaki\u2019s 16-year-old son<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/michele-bachmann-is-an-extremely-ignorant-disgrace\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michele Bachmann\u2019s disgraceful Iraq comments<\/a>, America\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/20\/gadhafi-is-dead-luckily-we-have-implicated-ourselves-in-libyas-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">new lease on Libya<\/a>, drones\u2019 ability <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/20\/drones-fuel-forever-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">to fuel forever war<\/a>, and possible <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/19\/what-if-the-anti-iran-mek-hatched-the-plot\/\" target=\"_blank\">MeK involvement in the Iran plot.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Columns<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Justin Raimondo wrote of <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2011\/10\/20\/moammar-gadhafi-r-i-p\/\" target=\"_blank\">the post-Gadhafi Libyan chaos<\/a> induced by NATO, Britain\u2019s defense minister <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2011\/10\/18\/the-sins-of-liam-fox\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liam Fox\u2019s ties to Israeli intelligence<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2011\/10\/16\/war-and-the-return-of-populism\/\" target=\"_blank\">the return of populist wars<\/a>. Ivan Eland <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/eland\/2011\/10\/20\/another-potential-quagmire-on-the-horizon\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> of the impending quagmire in Uganda. Philip Giraldi gave his expert, skeptical <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/giraldi\/2011\/10\/19\/how-to-kill-an-ambassador\/\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a> on the alleged Iranian plot to kill a Saudi ambassador in Washington. Kelley B. Vlahos <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/vlahos\/2011\/10\/17\/winslow-wheeler-shrugs-off-gadfly-epithet\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> about Winslow Wheeler\u2019s charge against the Goliaths of war.
