{"id":1271,"date":"2004-08-26T14:28:28","date_gmt":"2004-08-26T21:28:28","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2004-08-26T14:28:28","modified_gmt":"2004-08-26T21:28:28","slug":"it-just-keeps-getting-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2004\/08\/26\/it-just-keeps-getting-better\/","title":{"rendered":"It just keeps getting better"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hadn&#8217;t even originally planned on doing a blog entry this week, but I can&#8217;t pass up a chance like this:<\/p>\n<p>Timeline on Jonathan &#8220;call me Jack&#8221; Idema:<\/p>\n<p>July 7: <A HREF=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3873791.stm\">Three Americans and four Afghans arrested for operating private prison<\/A><\/p>\n<p>July 8:One of these men is <A HREF=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3876601.stm\">identified as Jack Idema<\/A>. An early report from Afghan officials says <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20040708.wabus0708\/BNStory\/International\/\">Afghan prisoners were hung by their feet<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p>July 9: Idema claims he&#8217;s the <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/afghanistan\/story\/0,1284,1257512,00.html\">inspiration behind George Clooney&#8217;s Role in <i>Peacemaker<\/i><\/A><\/p>\n<p>July 21: Idema Says <A HREF=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3912403.stm\">he was working with the knowledge of the DoD<\/A>. His Trial begins,<A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/world\/20040721-092948-3320r.htm\">the US military denies knowing anything<\/A> about what he was doing. <\/p>\n<p>July 23: Idema&#8217;s lawyer claims to have video proof he was working with the US. This is at first questioned, but later <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/afghanistan\/story\/0,1284,1267316,00.html\">US Military spokesman Major Jon Siepmann admits<\/A> that they did indeed receive prisoners from Idema&#8217;s group. They claim this was an isolated incident and they had no idea of anything else he was doing. <\/p>\n<p>July 27: Knight-Ridder releases a story about Jack Idema&#8217;s <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.duluthsuperior.com\/mld\/duluthsuperior\/news\/world\/9254726.htm\">career as a part-time journalist<\/A>.<\/p>\n<p>August 6: Idema&#8217;s <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.duluthsuperior.com\/mld\/duluthsuperior\/news\/world\/9335736.htm\">dubious<\/A> history is discussed in the article.<\/p>\n<p>August 11: Idema&#8217;s lawyer complains that he <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/3642104\/detail.html\">can&#8217;t get a fair trial<\/A> in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>August 16: Idema&#8217;s trial is delayed for a week when he claims the FBI is withholding evidence that could prove his innocence. The FBI <A HREF=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3568670.stm\">agrees to hand over the huge collection of files<\/A> relating to Idema and his group.<\/p>\n<p>August 23: After a week, Idema <A HREF=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3589800.stm\">complains that he hasn&#8217;t been given access to everything<\/A>, and that the documents would prove he was working for the US Army. The defense shows video of Afghanistan&#8217;s former Education Minister congratulating Idema and his group for capturing &#8220;terrorists&#8221; and promises to help them continue their work. One of Idema&#8217;s cohorts, Mr. Caraballo enters the courtroom with a crutch, and badly bruised feet. The prosecution claims he &#8220;slipped&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>August 24: The US investigates the treatment of Idema&#8217;s men while in custody, and <A HREF=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=516&#038;ncid=731&#038;e=2&#038;u=\/ap\/20040824\/ap_on_re_as\/afghan_us_vigilantes\"> decides that it was acceptable.<\/A><\/p>\n<p>August 25: The US once again denies any contact with Idema outside the single incident with the prisoners reported on July 23. They claim Idema had <A HREF=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=516&#038;ncid=731&#038;e=10&#038;u=\/ap\/20040825\/ap_on_re_as\/afghan_american_vigilante\">delusions of grandeur<\/A>, and that any contact he claimed was entirely in his head.<\/p>\n<p>August 26: The Department of Defense, after over a month of denials, finally <A HREF=http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/3601030.stm>admits that they were in contact with Idema<\/A>, and that Acting Director of Security Heather Anderson had telephoned him.<\/p>\n<p>This obviously isn&#8217;t over, but at the month and a half mark, I thought it would be a good time to review. I don&#8217;t know if the Pentagon is in contact with a lot of would-be A-Teams, but how could it take them nearly two months between the time of the initial arrest and the time where they finally remembered &#8220;oh yeah, we called him?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And at any rate, why lie (multiple times at that) about it? The story barely registers on the mainstream American press&#8217; radar.
