{"id":12933,"date":"2011-11-28T16:07:06","date_gmt":"2011-11-29T00:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=12933"},"modified":"2011-11-28T16:08:02","modified_gmt":"2011-11-29T00:08:02","slug":"u-s-made-tear-gas-used-on-egyptian-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/28\/u-s-made-tear-gas-used-on-egyptian-protesters\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S.-Made Tear Gas Used on Egyptian Protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More U.S.-made tear gas used against protesters in Egypt:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"460\" height=\"278\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/vAqJrzRHXMM&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=1&amp;showsearch=0\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/therealnews.com\/\">More at The Real News<\/a><\/object><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/28\/preventing-egyptian-democracy\/\">I&#8217;ve written about<\/a> many times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/14\/egypts-transition-to-scaf-has-us-support\/\">before<\/a>, &#8220;the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/08\/18\/us-egypt-military-cooperation-still-strong-despite-transitions-missteps\/\">close military relationship<\/a>\u00a0between the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/05\/panetta-meets-with-egypt-military-rulers\/\">U.S. and Egypt\/SCAF<\/a>\u00a0is&#8221; continuing and is\u00a0serving as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/09\/12\/egypt-reactivates-emergency-law-after-us-israeli-pressure\/\">an impediment to prospects for democratic governance<\/a>. Elections took place today in Egypt and we will soon see the results, but &#8211; as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/library\/asset\/MDE12\/053\/2011\/en\/47be269e-b67a-42f4-835b-787f91044e04\/mde120532011en.pdf\">a recent Amnesty International report<\/a> puts it &#8211; the elections <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.amnestyusa.org\/waronterror\/election-day-in-egypt-celebrations-and-concerns\/\">are being overshadowed<\/a> by the continuing abuses by the U.S.-supported military junta.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In fact, with regard to trials of civilians before military courts, the numbers have become worse.\u00a0 Bloggers, journalists, scholars and ordinary citizens have been silenced and charged with crimes such as \u201ccriticizing the military.\u201d When pressed to end the state of emergency, the military rulers repeatedly use security issues as an excuse to maintain the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the SCAF failed to heed the call of Amnesty International and Egyptian activists to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/research\/reports\/egypt-investigate-security-forces-crimes-now\">demand accountability for the security abuses<\/a>\u00a0of the past Mubarak regime.\u00a0 Certainly key members of the previous government have gone on trial, including Mubarak himself.\u00a0 But the SCAF never took steps to investigate past abuses.\u00a0<strong>Without accountability, the police and security officials of the past regime simply returned to their old jobs<\/strong>; it should be no surprise that the old regime\u2019s violence toward protesters is now getting repeated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The above links I provided detail recent U.S. military and economic aid to Egypt making the &#8220;U.S.A&#8221; on those tear gas canisters seem like a mundane feature of the status quo. The Government Accountability Office has made it clear that the U.S. is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/new.items\/d1289.pdf\">unable to track their weapons welfare<\/a>\u00a0to see whether it is used on civilians. But really, anybody with mental faculties rivaling that of a 10 year old kid can predict they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/29\/the-specs-of-us-weapons-welfare\/&amp;sa=U&amp;ei=TSLUTrPWN4fb0QGKz_n5AQ&amp;ved=0CAQQFjAA&amp;client=internal-uds-cse&amp;usg=AFQjCNH1dvxIMZbhe_o7poberXaZzU_JrQ\">U.S.-donated weapons<\/a> to military rulers will eventually be used on the people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More U.S.-made tear gas used against protesters in Egypt: More at The Real News As I&#8217;ve written about many times before, &#8220;the\u00a0close military relationship\u00a0between the\u00a0U.S. and Egypt\/SCAF\u00a0is&#8221; continuing and is\u00a0serving as\u00a0an impediment to prospects for democratic governance.
