But, as<a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/12\/14\/flags-burn-as-last-us-troops-trickle-out-of-iraq\/\"> Iraqis burned the American flag yesterday during the last troops&#8217; withdrawal<\/a>, here&#8217;s a nice illustration of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/15\/world\/middleeast\/united-states-marines-haditha-interviews-found-in-iraq-junkyard.html?_r=1&amp;ref=world\">why they might not be so thankful<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The documents \u2014 many marked secret \u2014 form part of the military\u2019s internal investigation, and confirm much of what happened at Haditha, a Euphrates River town where Marines killed 24 Iraqis, including a 76-year-old man in a wheelchair, women and children, some just toddlers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Iraqi civilians were being killed all the time. Maj. Gen. Steve Johnson, the commander of American forces in Anbar,<a title=\"Major Johnson\u2019s testimony\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2011\/12\/15\/world\/middleeast\/haditha-selected-documents.html?ref=middleeast#document\/p18\/a41205\">\u00a0in his own testimony<\/a>, described it as \u201ca cost of doing business.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Haditha massacre is reminiscent as well of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/08\/29\/cables-reveal-2006-summary-execution-of-civilian-family-in-iraq\/\">the brutal slaughter of 10 Iraqi men, women and children in 2006<\/a>, as revealed by WikiLeaks diplomatic cables.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I talked to Scott Horton yesterday about whether or not the Iraq war is really over and whether or not America endowed every Iraqi with freedom and independence (as opposed to a creeping dictatorship).
