The Bahraini security forces penchant for tear gas came only after they learned that slaughtering their citizens with live rounds of heavy ammunition attracted a lot of unwanted international attention. Now, tear gas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/27\/they-beat-us-until-they-got-tired\/\">severe beatings<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/11\/01\/bahrain-probe-finds-torture-was-systematic\/\">torture<\/a> behind closed doors are the preferred tactics of repression.<\/p>\n<p>In Bahrain,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2011\/10\/18\/us-finalizes-53m-arms-sale-to-bahrain\/\">the U.S. has sent<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2012\/02\/08\/obama-sends-bahrain-arms-despite-continuing-repression\/\">military aid<\/a>\u00a0despite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/09\/23\/americas-humiliating-grip-of-corruption-and-tyranny-in-bahrain\/\">harsh repression<\/a> of largely peaceful protests, including\u00a0dozens of American tanks, armored personnel carriers, helicopter gunships, riot gear, thousands of .38 caliber pistols and millions of rounds of ammunition, from .50 caliber rounds used in sniper rifles and machine guns to bullets for handguns. After international condemnation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/27\/why-us-support-for-sadistic-tyranny-in-bahrain-continues\/\">Obama\u2019s support for the dictatorship<\/a>, the administration\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thecable.foreignpolicy.com\/posts\/2012\/01\/27\/obama_administration_selling_new_arms_package_to_bahrain\">jumped through legal loopholes to send Bahrain an additional arms package<\/a>\u00a0that, once complete, may include $50 million worth of armored vehicles, high-tech TOW and bunker buster missiles, anti-tank rocket launchers, and spare parts and military communications equipment.
