Martin Dempsey says there is no need for the recent GOP push to build a missile defense system on the East coast of the United States.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JhDsRiFMd20\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH,) who supported the East Coast missile defense measure,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/226265-republican-plans-east-coast-missile-defense-shield\">claims<\/a>\u00a0it\u2019s needed \u201cto lessen the threats from both Iran and North Korea.\u201d But the AP\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2012\/05\/ap-house-panel-oks-east-coast-missile-defense-site-051012\/\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that Lt. Gen. Patrick J. O\u2019Reilly, the head of the U.S. missile defense program, told Congress recently that North Korea lacks the testing for a capable system and has made little progress in its spaceflight program. And former CIA Mideast analyst Paul Pillar has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/dangerroom\/2012\/04\/east-coast-missile-defense\/\">noted<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe intelligence community does not believe [the Iranians] are anywhere close to having an ICBM [intercontinental ballistic missile].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, as Dempsey hinted at in the press conference, Danger Room\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/dangerroom\/2012\/04\/east-coast-missile-defense\/\">notes<\/a>\u00a0that existing systems already have the eastern sea board covered from ICBM threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a political move,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/defcon-hill\/policy-and-strategy\/226265-republican-plans-east-coast-missile-defense-shield\">said<\/a>\u00a0Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) referring to the GOP\u2019s missile defense scheme. \u201cEvery time the election comes around, the Republicans run out a national security agenda.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This just shows how fervently nationalistic and militaristic many representatives in Congress are, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/01\/when-military-leaders-go-antiwar\/&amp;sa=U&amp;ei=j02sT-uVLIK88ATZlKG1BA&amp;ved=0CAQQFjAA&amp;client=internal-uds-cse&amp;usg=AFQjCNFs2hiPuB5myIx7U-tJk3AL77nAxw\">even compared to military officials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How about <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2012\/05\/03\/russia-threatens-preemptive-strike-if-nato-builds-missile-defense-shield\/\">NATO&#8217;s push for missile defense in Eastern Europe<\/a>?
