{"id":15400,"date":"2012-06-11T07:05:27","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T15:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=15400"},"modified":"2012-06-11T07:05:27","modified_gmt":"2012-06-11T15:05:27","slug":"senate-drones-should-operate-freely-and-routinely-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/11\/senate-drones-should-operate-freely-and-routinely-in-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate: Drones Should Operate &#8216;Freely and Routinely&#8217; in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/blog\/secrecy\/2012\/06\/freely_and_routinely.html\">From Secrecy News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLarge number of UASs now deployed overseas may be returned to the United States as the conflict in Afghanistan and operations elsewhere wind down in coming years, and new UASs are under development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the ability to operate freely and routinely in the NAS, UAS development and training\u2013 and ultimately operational capabilities\u2013 will be severely impacted,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/irp\/congress\/2012_cr\/sasc-uas.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Committee report said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the House of Representatives yesterday approved an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/irp\/congress\/2012_cr\/dhs-uas.html\" target=\"_blank\">amendment<\/a>\u00a0to the 2013 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill that would prohibit DHS from acquiring or flying drones that have weapons onboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the funds made available by this Act may be used for the purchase, operation, or maintenance of armed unmanned aerial vehicles,\u201d says the provision sponsored by Rep.
