This honor is for his outstanding research into the military&#8217;s targeted killing strategy in Afghanistan. Porter freelances for InterPress News Service (IPS) but carries on his work independently, at his own cost, and cares not so much for the glory, but for the illuminating effect his reporting could have on the national discussion. A true journalist. I&#8217;m glad he is getting his due. Here&#8217;s the press release:<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 TOP UK AWARD GOES TO JOURNALIST WHO EXPOSED <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 SECRETS OF AFGHANISTAN WAR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gareth Porter, the Washington-based journalist, has won the prestigious Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism for 2012 for his investigation of US \u2018killing strategy\u2019 in Afghanistan, including the targeting of people through their mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>The judges said: \u2018In a series of extraordinary articles, Gareth Porter has torn away the facades of the Obama administration and disclosed a military strategy that amounts to a war against civilians.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Martha Gellhorn Prize is given in honour of one of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2019s greatest reporters and is awarded to a journalist \u2018whose work has penetrated the established version of events and told an unpalatable truth that exposes establishment propaganda, or \u201cofficial drivel\u201d, as Martha Gellhorn called it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Previous winners include Robert Fisk of the <em>Independent<\/em>, Nick Davies of the <em>Guardian<\/em>, Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, and the late Marie Colvin of the <em>Sunday Times<\/em> (special award).<\/p>\n<p>Those short-listed for this year\u2019s prize were Amelia Gentleman of the <em>Guardian<\/em> for her articles about Britain\u2019s \u2018forgotten people\u2019, the elderly and young offenders, described by the judges as \u2018unique and eloquent\u2019 ; and Phil Hammond and Andrew Bousfield for their \u2018stunning\u2019 special investigation in <em>Private Eye<\/em>, \u2018Shoot the messenger: How NHS whistleblowers are silenced and sacked\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Martha Gellhorn Trust judges are: Dr. Alexander Matthews, John Pilger, James Fox, Jeremy Harding, Cynthia Kee and Shirlee Matthews.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For information: Dr. Alexander Matthews sandyandshirlee@phonecoop.coop<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I just found out that my friend and familiar Antiwar.com byline (and radio guest) Gareth Porter, has just won the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism in London.
