{"id":15879,"date":"2012-07-23T11:41:07","date_gmt":"2012-07-23T19:41:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=15879"},"modified":"2012-07-23T11:41:38","modified_gmt":"2012-07-23T19:41:38","slug":"drones-and-due-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/23\/drones-and-due-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Drones and Due Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An excerpt of Noam Chomsky&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomdispatch.com\/post\/175571\/tomgram%3A_noam_chomsky%2C_the_great_charter%2C_its_fate%2C_and_ours\/\">latest contribution<\/a> to TomDispatch:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The concept of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/09\/30\/awlaki_6\/\">due process<\/a>\u00a0has been extended under the Obama administration\u2019s international assassination campaign in a way that renders this core element of the Charter of Liberties (and the Constitution) null and void.\u00a0 The Justice Department explained that the constitutional guarantee of due process, tracing to Magna Carta, is now satisfied by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/09\/30\/awlaki_6\/\">internal deliberations<\/a>\u00a0in the executive branch alone.\u00a0 The constitutional lawyer in the White House agreed.\u00a0 King John might have nodded with satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Presumption of innocence has also been given a new and useful interpretation.\u00a0 As the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/29\/world\/obamas-leadership-in-war-on-al-qaeda.html\">reported<\/a>, \u201cMr. Obama embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties that did little to box him in.
