{"id":1663,"date":"2005-01-19T10:41:46","date_gmt":"2005-01-19T17:41:46","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2005-01-19T10:41:46","modified_gmt":"2005-01-19T17:41:46","slug":"quotations-of-chairman-jonah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2005\/01\/19\/quotations-of-chairman-jonah\/","title":{"rendered":"Quotations of Chairman Jonah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>&#8220;Amid the media din about the tsunami, Dan Rather&#8217;s implosion, and the usual grim news from Iraq, an amazing story has been unfolding &#8212; but has received scant appreciation from the chattering classes. <span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Democracy is on the march<\/span>.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/goldberg\/goldberg200501181423.asp\">Jonah Goldberg<\/a>, <i>National Review<\/i>, January 18, 2005<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;A former Jordanian government minister has told <\/i>The New Yorker<i> that an American official confirmed to him that the Iraqi interim Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, executed six suspected insurgents at a Baghdad police station last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The claim is in an extensive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fact\/content\/?050124fa_fact1\">profile of Dr. Allawi<\/a> written for this week&#8217;s issue of the magazine by an American journalist, Jon Lee Anderson, the author of <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/1594200343\/102-9070111-4235326?v=glance\">The Fall of Baghdad<\/a><i> and a regular Baghdad correspondent for <\/i>The New Yorker<i>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Writing about his research in Jordan in December, Anderson says: &#8216;A well-known former government minister told me that an American official had confirmed that the killings took place, saying to him, &#8216;What a mess we&#8217;re in &#8211; we got rid of one son of a bitch only to get another one.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<\/i>The New Yorker<i> also revealed that Anderson was present during an interview conducted by the <\/i>Herald<i>&#8216;s chief correspondent, Paul McGeough, in late June, with a man who said he witnessed the executions by Dr. Allawi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr Allawi denied the allegations when they were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sundayherald.com\/43475\n\">published<\/a> in the <\/i>Herald<i> last July.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anderson writes: &#8216;The man &#8230; described how Allawi had been taken to seven suspects, who were made to stand against a wall in a courtyard of the police station, their faces covered. After being told of their alleged crimes by a police official, Allawi had asked for a pistol, and then shot each prisoner in the head.
