{"id":16745,"date":"2012-10-17T06:31:52","date_gmt":"2012-10-17T14:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=16745"},"modified":"2012-10-17T06:31:52","modified_gmt":"2012-10-17T14:31:52","slug":"us-soldiers-arrested-for-gang-raping-japanese-woman-near-okinawa-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/us-soldiers-arrested-for-gang-raping-japanese-woman-near-okinawa-base\/","title":{"rendered":"US Soldiers Arrested for Gang-Raping Japanese Woman Near Okinawa Base"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is not the first time <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rnw.nl\/english\/bulletin\/two-us-sailors-arrested-over-okinawa-rape-reports\">this has happened<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two US servicemen were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of gang-raping a Japanese woman in Okinawa, reports said, as anti-American feeling runs high on the strategically vital island.<\/p>\n<p>The incident comes amid swelling protests over the recent deployment on the island of 12 Osprey transport aircraft, with the plane&#8217;s perceived poor safety sparking concern among local residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;One of sailors admitted carrying out the attack, but the other has denied it, according to TV Asahi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2012\/10\/17\/the-geopolitical-implications-of-another-american-rape-in-japan\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-16746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Japan_US_Military_0e35f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"261\" \/><\/a>Tens of thousands of US troops have been stationed in Japan since WWII, and the local population has been firmly against the occupation with frequent protests urging their removal.\u00a0Up to\u00a085% of the Okinawan population wants US troops out. Not only do they not want to be occupied by a foreign military, but they\u2019re fed up with the outrageous behavior of the American Marines.\u00a0Between 1972 and 2009,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/2011\/mar\/07\/okinawa-japan-military-tension\">there were 5,634 criminal offenses committed by US servicemen<\/a>, including 25 murders, 385 burglaries, 25 arsons, 127 rapes, 306 assaults and 2,827 thefts.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese leaders can&#8217;t submit to the will of the people on this issue for obvious reasons: the mafia don in Washington won&#8217;t allow it. &#8220;In 2010, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama pledged to relocate the U.S. base, then\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/05\/05\/world\/asia\/05japan.html\">backtracked<\/a>\u00a0under US pressure,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/worldviews\/wp\/2012\/10\/17\/the-geopolitical-implications-of-another-american-rape-in-japan\/\">reports<\/a> the <em>Washington Post<\/em>. &#8220;Outraged Okinawans staged public protests, demonstrations spread to Tokyo, Hatoyama\u2019s approval rating plummeted to 25 percent \u00a0and he\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/02\/world\/asia\/02japan.html?hp\">resigned<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post<\/em> continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Opposition to the U.S. base at Okinawa has been a big deal in Japan for years. \u201cLocal newspapers in Okinawa, which are strongly anti-base, give intense coverage to crimes by American military personnel and their families,\u201d the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/17\/world\/asia\/2-us-navy-sailors-arrested-in-okinawa-rape.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;_r=0\">explained<\/a>. It\u2019s also about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2012\/10\/12\/solving_the_okinawa_problem?page=full\">the base itself<\/a>, which is in the middle of a dense residential neighborhood and surrounded by schools. The recent arrival of new American aircraft, the tiltrotor V-22 Osprey, which locals believe is too dangerous, provoked \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/02\/world\/asia\/united-states-military-sends-ospreys-to-okinawa-despite-fierce-opposition.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss\">unexpectedly fierce opposition<\/a>.\u201d And maybe it shouldn\u2019t be surprising that this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/heinonline.org\/HOL\/LandingPage?collection=journals&amp;handle=hein.journals\/fora82&amp;div=98&amp;id=&amp;page=\">historically nationalist society<\/a>\u00a0isn\u2019t crazy about an enormous foreign military presence on its soil.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The bases in Japan were some of the most important Far East outposts in the American Empire in the years following WWII, and they&#8217;ve retained their geo-political importance to those in Washington who demand having military bases the world over. But the bases in Japan have garnered renewed importance since President Obama announced his <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/17\/inventing-the-chinese-threat\/\">strategic pivot to Asia-Pacific<\/a>. The base now serves as <a href=\"http:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2012\/09\/27\/war-between-japan-and-china-looms-with-us-meddling-in-backdrop\/\">an important show of force to China<\/a>, a country on the rise economically and militarily, which Washington wants <a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/02\/countering-china-the-empire-in-asia\/\">desperately to contain<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is not the first time this has happened: Two US servicemen were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of gang-raping a Japanese woman in Okinawa, reports said, as anti-American feeling runs high on the strategically vital island.
