NATO issued its usual dismissive statement, admitting\u00a0it may have \u201caccidentally killed three innocent Afghan civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/04\/us-military-says-killing-afghan-children-is-fair-game\/afghan-civilians\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17347\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17347\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Afghan-civilians.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Afghan-civilians-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Afghan-civilians.jpg 351w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a>But now, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2012\/12\/marine-taliban-kids-120312w\"><em>Military Times<\/em><\/a>, the US military includes children on their list of who they&#8217;re allowed to murder with impunity.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;a Marine official here raised questions about whether the children were \u201cinnocent.\u201d Before calling for the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System mission in mid-October, Marines observed the children digging a hole in a dirt road in Nawa district, the official said, and the Taliban may have recruited the children to carry out the mission.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So digging holes in Afghanistan is now grounds for getting bombed? The children&#8217;s relatives and local tribal elders had confirmed at the time that they were not Taliban recruits and were not planting any roadside bombs.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s apparently not enough for the US military to simply admit that killing innocent children is wrong. Instead, they invent Orwellian rationales for why these poor children were worthy enemy combatants.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt kind of opens our aperture,\u201d said Army Lt. Col. Marion \u201cCed\u201d Carrington, whose unit, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was assisting the Afghan police. \u201cIn addition to looking for military-age males, it\u2019s looking for children with potential hostile intent.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There you have it.
