{"id":18228,"date":"2013-02-14T08:07:44","date_gmt":"2013-02-14T16:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=18228"},"modified":"2013-02-14T17:10:55","modified_gmt":"2013-02-15T01:10:55","slug":"pakistani-disapproval-of-us-highest-ever-contra-brennan-fantasy-that-drones-are-welcomed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/14\/pakistani-disapproval-of-us-highest-ever-contra-brennan-fantasy-that-drones-are-welcomed\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistani Disapproval of US Highest Ever, Contra Brennan Fantasy That Drones Are &#8216;Welcomed&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During John Brennan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/intelligence.senate.gov\/130207\/transcript.pdf\">Senate confirmation hearings<\/a> last week, Senator Susan Collins asked him about whether the drone strikes in Pakistan are &#8220;creating a backlash&#8221; and &#8220;creating new terrorists when a neighbor or family member is killed in the course of the operations.&#8221; She cited statements to that effect from General Stanley McChrystal and\u00a0former CIA Director Michael Hayden.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Brennan demurred, insisting that &#8220;we, in fact, have found in many areas is that the people are being held hostage to al-Qa\u2019ida in these areas and have welcomed the work that the U.S. Government has done with their governments to rid them of the al-Qa\u2019ida cancer that exists.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/160439\/2012-pakistani-disapproval-leadership-soars.aspx?utm_source=alert&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=syndication&amp;utm_content=morelink&amp;utm_term=All%20Gallup%20Headlines%20-%20USA\">a new Gallup poll<\/a>, more than nine out of ten Pakistanis (92%) disapprove of US leadership. Only 4% approve, &#8220;the lowest approval rating Pakistanis have ever given.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18229\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/alg8n36j0umcje4bi-oucg.gif\" width=\"468\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Which of the 92% of Pakistanis that disapprove of US leadership does Brennan believe are &#8220;welcoming&#8221; of the drone war?<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that this disapproval rating is largely a result of the fact that Washington has been bombing their country for about 10 years, with up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebureauinvestigates.com\/category\/projects\/drones\/\">364 strikes and 3,000 people killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/livingunderdrones.org\/\">study<\/a>\u00a0last year\u00a0by researchers at the Stanford and NYU schools of law\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/headline\/2012\/09\/25-0\">found<\/a>\u00a0that the drone program is \u201cterrorizing\u201d the people of Pakistan and that it is having \u201ccounterproductive\u201d effects in the population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence suggests that US strikes have facilitated recruitment to violent non-state armed groups, and motivated further violent attacks,&#8221; the study said. &#8220;As the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0has<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/05\/29\/world\/obamas-leadership-in-war-on-al-qaeda.html?pagewanted=all\">\u00a0reported<\/a>, \u2018drones have replaced Guant\u00e1namo as the recruiting tool of choice for militants.\u2019 Drone strikes have also soured many Pakistanis on cooperation with the US and undermined US-Pakistani rel\u00adations. One\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewglobal.org\/files\/2012\/06\/Pew-Global-Attitudes-Project-Pakistan-Report-FINAL-Wednesday-June-27-2012.pdf\">major study shows<\/a>\u00a0that 74% of Pakistanis now consider the US an enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This goes not just for Pakistan, but for Yemen too. According to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/in-yemen-us-airstrikes-breed-anger-and-sympathy-for-al-qaeda\/2012\/05\/29\/gJQAUmKI0U_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>, drone strikes are not &#8220;welcomed&#8221; by the population, as Brennan claims, but serve to radicalize the population against America.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The evidence of radicalization emerged in more than 20 interviews with tribal leaders, victims\u2019 relatives, human rights activists and officials from four provinces in southern Yemen where U.S. strikes have targeted suspected militants,&#8221; the <em>Post<\/em> reported. &#8220;They described a strong shift in sentiment toward militants affiliated with the transnational network\u2019s most active wing, al-Qaeda in the \u00adArabian Peninsula, or AQAP.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have gone a long way down the road of creating a situation where we are creating more enemies than we are removing from the battlefield.
