{"id":2199,"date":"2005-07-01T00:39:58","date_gmt":"2005-07-01T07:39:58","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2005-07-01T00:39:58","modified_gmt":"2005-07-01T07:39:58","slug":"neocon-slanders-america-national-review-silent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2005\/07\/01\/neocon-slanders-america-national-review-silent\/","title":{"rendered":"Neocon Slanders America: National Review Silent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jameswolcott.com\/archives\/2005\/06\/little_miss_sun.php\">James Wolcott<\/a> reads <i>National Review<\/i> &#8212; so you don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of <i>National Review<\/i>, they recently ran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/editorial\/editors200506200849.asp\">an editorial<\/a> accusing Senator Dick Durbin of perpetrating an &#8220;anti-American slander&#8221; most foul when he compared Guantanamo to the Soviet gulag, averring that this is characteristic not only of Durbin but of his party. What must they make of this recent tidbit unearthed by the <i>New Yorker<\/i> in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fact\/content\/articles\/050704fa_fact\">piece<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larry_Franklin\">Larry Franklin<\/a>-AIPAC espionage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2004\/0831\/dailyUpdate.html\">scandal<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;At about this time, Franklin received a call from Michael Ledeen, his ally in matters of Iran policy. &#8216;I called him and said, \u2018Larry, what\u2019s going on?\u2019 &#8216; Ledeen recalled. &#8216;He said, \u2018Don\u2019t worry. Sharansky\u2019 &#8216;\u2014Natan Sharansky, the former Soviet dissident\u2014&#8217; \u2018survived years in the Gulag, and I\u2019ll survive prison, too.\u2019 &#8216;&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Ledeen, by the way, who often graces the pages of <i>National Review<\/i>, might have saved them the embarrassment of publishing such a singularly fatuous editorial. <\/p>\n<p>Anti-American slander &#8212; it&#8217;s everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justinlogan.com\/justinlogancom\/2005\/07\/stop_me_before_.html\">The convergence of the Two Justins<\/a>.
