First, it&#8217;s the paper that gave Nytol its name. More conducive to my indifference, though, were the hosannas Tierney&#8217;s appointment drew from the likes of <a href=http:\/\/www.dynamist.com\/weblog\/archives\/001632.html>Virginia Postrel<\/a>, <a href=http:\/\/www.reason.com\/hitandrun\/2005\/03\/first_we_take_m_1.shtml><i>Reason<\/i><\/a>, and <a href=http:\/\/www.qando.net\/details.aspx?Entry=1280>neolibertarian central<\/a>. Hurrah, I thought, another wonker obsessed, at best, with tweaking Social Security or, at worst, with eradicating &#8220;Islamofascism.&#8221; Glenn Reynolds&#8217; <a href=http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&#038;q=%22john+tierney%22+site%3Ainstapundit.com>enthusiasm<\/a> did nothing to soften my prejudice.<\/p>\n<p>Then came <a href=http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/comments.php?id=P2181_0_1_0>this article<\/a>, which hinted at better things. Then <a href=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/02\/opinion\/02tierney.html?ex=1121140800&#038;en=30d4bebd6194700b&#038;ei=5070&#038;emc=eta1>this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Postrel, Reynolds, and co. <a href=http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/search\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/02\/opinion\/02tierney.html>appear not to have read it<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When John Tierney was named a columnist at the New York Times back in March, I yawned.
