{"id":23622,"date":"2014-06-11T19:06:47","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T03:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=23622"},"modified":"2014-06-11T19:06:47","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T03:06:47","slug":"sucked-into-distractions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/11\/sucked-into-distractions\/","title":{"rendered":"Sucked Into Distractions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s funny how so many people in the peace and justice movement, in which I\u2019ve been an active participant for the past decade, have been sucked into various distractions in recent years.&nbsp; This didn&#8217;t happen very often during the Bush presidency.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent distraction is the Bowe Bergdahl fiasco, which is pure politics.&nbsp; If a Republican were in the White House, it would be the Democrats causing a stink \u2013 this is simply a matter of the party that&#8217;s <i>not<\/i> in power using an issue to gain political points.<\/p>\n<p>If there were nothing else to read about, think about, discuss and take action on, maybe getting sucked into this political theater would be understandable.<\/p>\n<p>But there are plenty of things today that need the immediate attention of people in the antiwar community \u2013 issues on which the establishment doesn&#8217;t want people to focus.&nbsp; Things like: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National Security Advisor Susan Rice announcing on June 6 that the US is now sending lethal weapons to the &#8220;opposition&#8221; in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/06\/rice-united-states-is-leading-with-lethal-and-non-lethal-aid-to-syria\/\">Syria<\/a>, which means that we are arming al-Qaeda. <\/li>\n<li>Digging into the situation in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/06\/11\/world\/meast\/iraq-violence\/index.html?hpt=hp_t1\">Iraq<\/a>, where on Wednesday an al-Qaeda splinter group took control of Tikrit, and on Tuesday took over the country&#8217;s second largest city, Mosul.&nbsp; 500,000 people have fled in the past days.&nbsp; <b>The al-Qaeda group responsible for the takeovers in Iraq is the same group the US is arming in Syria<\/b>.&nbsp; All the while, the US continues to funnel tons of weapons to Iraq&#8217;s government \u2013 <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2014\/06\/10\/militants-seize-provincial-hq-in-iraqi-city-mosul\/10270053\/\">including sniper rifles, tank rounds and missiles<\/a> \u2013 so, is the US arming both sides in a country that it has already ruined? <\/li>\n<li>How the US is creating chaos in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/stpeteforpeace.org\/ukraine.html\">Ukraine<\/a> by siding with neo-Nazis and a government that is bombing its own citizens. <\/li>\n<li>Exposing how the US is supporting a neo-fascist who took office in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2014\/02\/el-sisi-egypt-dictator-103628.html\">Egypt<\/a> last week. <\/li>\n<li>Unveiling how a US citizen is leading a violent coup in <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/africa\/rival-militias-prepare-for-showdown-in-tripoli-after-takeover-of-parliament\/2014\/05\/19\/cb36acc2-df6f-11e3-810f-764fe508b82d_story.html\">Libya<\/a>, and how the rest of Africa is rapidly being populated by the US military in what may be turning into the new Middle East. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, the US is arming al-Qaeda in Syria, is continuing to devastate Iraq, is crushing democracy in Egypt, is teaming up with neo-Nazis in Ukraine and is re-colonizing Africa.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>And most of the antiwar left is silent.<\/p>\n<p>Or doing protests to &#8220;Shut Down Guantanamo,&#8221; which was a cool and timely thing to do\u202610 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, at the very top of the G7 agenda last week was Ukraine.&nbsp; World leaders understand that what is occurring in Ukraine is a defining moment for western powers, Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>Even the <a HREF=\"http:\/\/americasmarkets.usatoday.com\/2014\/06\/06\/5-reasons-why-the-stock-market-is-shining-bright\/\">USA Today<\/a> on Monday wrote that a key reason the stock market is thriving is because the crisis in Ukraine has not yet devolved into a new Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>The powers that be fully comprehend that what&#8217;s happening in Ukraine today is paramount to whether or not the US continues to maintain its stature as the world&#8217;s sole superpower.&nbsp; So they must be thrilled that progressive commentators and groups are falling way behind, and not driving the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>It really makes you wonder that if Mitt Romney had become president, would the left be silent if he teamed up with neo-Nazis and al-Qaeda?&nbsp; Would antiwar groups be doing <a HREF=\"http:\/\/answercoalition.org\/\">protests for Bowe Bergdahl<\/a> if Democrats and Republicans swapped roles in the political game?<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s going to shake the antiwar community from being distracted and walking into the traps set by those who want people to bicker over Republicans and Democrats? The <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.stopwar.org.uk\/\">Stop the War Coalition<\/a> in the UK, the <a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.iacenter.org\/\">International Action Center<\/a> in New York, and Antiwar.com are a few of the entities that have stayed on point and are getting out in front of the real issues.
