{"id":26155,"date":"2015-11-23T19:00:21","date_gmt":"2015-11-24T03:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=26155"},"modified":"2015-11-23T19:00:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T03:00:21","slug":"new-york-times-finally-covers-2012-defense-intelligence-agency-isis-memo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/23\/new-york-times-finally-covers-2012-defense-intelligence-agency-isis-memo\/","title":{"rendered":"<I>New York Times<\/I> Finally Covers 2012 Defense Intelligence Agency ISIS Memo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/levantreport.com\/2015\/06\/05\/the-dia-islamic-state-story-going-out-on-a-limb-with-independent-muckraking\/\" target=\"_blank\">written before<\/a> about the way news of the declassified 2012 Defense Intelligence <a href=\"http:\/\/levantreport.com\/2015\/05\/19\/2012-defense-intelligence-agency-document-west-will-facilitate-rise-of-islamic-state-in-order-to-isolate-the-syrian-regime\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> spread: throughout early summer it headlined around the world especially in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesundaytimes.co.uk\/sto\/news\/focus\/article1560083.ece\" target=\"_blank\">Britain<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.welt.de\/politik\/ausland\/article141535362\/Nahmen-die-USA-den-IS-Aufstieg-billigend-in-Kauf.html\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/op-edge\/262265-dia-report-isis-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russia<\/a>; yet there was complete mainstream media silence in the U.S. even as (in the words of a Daily Beast <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/brad_hoff\/2015\/06\/12\/mocking-the-dia-report-on-the-creation-of-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>) it \u201cate the web.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the document was referenced and analyzed in literally hundreds of independent\/alternative and foreign media reports, major U.S. news maintained its silence, even after Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (Ret.), head of the DIA at the time the report was prepared, <a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/brad_hoff\/2015\/08\/06\/former-dia-chief-warned-white-house-of-isis-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed its accuracy<\/a> and importance in an Al Jazeera interview with Mehdi Hasan.<\/p>\n<p>Even with Flynn\u2019s public and unambiguous confirmation of the document, the American public remained largely <a href=\"http:\/\/roguenationblog.com\/2015\/05\/22\/msm-ignoring-bombshell-intel-doc-on-the-rise-of-isis-the-complicity-of-us-its-allies\/\" target=\"_blank\">in the dark<\/a> as to the document\u2019s existence.<\/p>\n<p>While the rest of the world had easy access to the interview which featured lengthy discussion of the document with a man who was in 2012 and prior one of the top three highest ranking intelligence officials in Washington, it did not air on Al Jazeera America, and the program itself remains geo-blocked for Americans wishing to access it through Al Jazeera\u2019s official YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <i>New York Times<\/i> has finally acknowledged the 2012 DIA report a full six months after its release through FOIA , including new statements confirming its high importance, in a lengthy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/19\/world\/middleeast\/in-rise-of-isis-no-single-missed-key-but-many-strands-of-blame.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=b-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">investigative piece<\/a> about the rise of ISIS. To my great surprise the article sources my initial reporting of the Pentagon document [emphasis mine]:<\/p>\n<p><i>Since last spring the group, also known as <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/a\/al_qaeda_in_mesopotamia\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"More articles about the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.\"><i>ISIS<\/i><\/a><i> or ISIL, has been expanding beyond its local struggle to international terrorism. In the last two weeks, it did that in a spectacular way, first claiming responsibility for <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/18\/world\/europe\/russia-plane-crash-bomb.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>downing a Russian planeload of 224 people,<\/i><\/a><i> then sending squads of killers who ended the lives of <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/16\/world\/middleeast\/beirut-lebanon-attacks-paris.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>43 people in Beirut<\/i><\/a><i> and <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/news-event\/attacks-in-paris\" target=\"_blank\"><i>129 in Paris<\/i><\/a><i>. As the world scrambles to respond, the questions pile up like the dead: Who are they? What do they want? Were signals missed that could have stopped the Islamic State before it became so deadly?<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>And there were, in fact, more than hints of the group\u2019s plans and potential. <strong>A <\/strong><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/defense-intelligence-agency-create-a-salafist-principality-in-syria-facilitate-rise-of-islamic-state-in-order-to-isolate-the-syrian-regime\/5451216\" target=\"_blank\"><b><i>2012 report<\/i><\/b><\/a><strong><i> by the United States Defense Intelligence Agency was direct:<\/i><\/strong><i> The growing chaos in <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/syria\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"More news and information about Syria.\"><i>Syria<\/i><\/a><i>\u2019s civil war was giving Islamic militants there and in Iraq the space to spread and flourish. The group, it said, could \u201cdeclare an Islamic state through its union with other terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cThis particular report, this was one of those nobody wanted to see,\u201d<\/i><\/strong><i> said Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, who ran the defense agency at the time.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cIt was disregarded by the White House,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was disregarded by other elements in the intelligence community as a one-off report. Frankly, at the White House, it didn\u2019t meet the narrative.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The syndicated <i>NYTimes<\/i> article hit newsstands in multiple U.S. cities over the past weekend.
