While Rice has so far <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/07\/21\/AR2006072101438.html\">denied<\/a> there would be any American participation, the wording of her statement \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as I explained in <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/24\/an-international-force-with-no-americans\/\"><font size=\"2\">this blog post<\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c suggested a reversal might be in the works. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">And so it is. Ken Silverstein, writing in <em>Harper\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/em>, <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/sb-source-bush-admin-lebanon-1153936109.html\"><font size=\"2\">reports<\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\">:<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">&#8220;A well-connected former CIA officer has told me that the Bush Administration is in fact considering exactly such a deployment. \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 According to the former official, Israel and the United States are currently discussing a large American role in exactly such a &#8220;multinational&#8221; deployment, and some top administration officials, along with senior civilians at the Pentagon, are receptive to the idea.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font size=\"2\">If and when American troops take on Hezbollah, at least there won&#8217;t be any <a href=\"http:\/\/72.14.209.104\/search?q=cache:LSnoULXeN9sJ:ksgnotes1.harvard.edu\/Research\/wpaper.nsf\/rwp\/RWP06-011\/$File\/rwp_06_011_walt.pdf%2BJohn%2BJ.%2BMearsheimer%2Band%2BStephen%2BWalt&#038;hl=en&#038;gl=us&#038;ct=clnk&#038;cd=4\">debate<\/a> about whether we&#8217;re fighting a war for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amconmag.com\/03_24_03\/cover.html\">Israel&#8217;<\/a>s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/opinion\/editorials\/2003-03-17-oppose_x.htm\">sake<\/a>.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That &#8220;robust&#8221; multi-national force Condolezza Rice wants to take over from the IDF in crushing Hezbollah is looking sicklier by the moment: NATO says it is otherwise engaged, and no one except the Italians and possibly the Turks has stepped forward to apply for the job.
