But there&#8217;s another possibility: are they positioning to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/news\/?articleid=9444\">move against Syria<\/a>? Damascus is next, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.axcessnews.com\/modules\/wfsection\/article.php?articleid=10663\">says Bashar al-Assad<\/a> &#8212; and the he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.news.com.au\/story\/0,20867,19990919-2703,00.html\">mobilized<\/a> the Syrian army to back up his contention.<\/p>\n<p>Every day the\u00c2\u00a0Israelis bomb\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.news.com.au\/story\/0,20867,19981090-23109,00.html\">closer<\/a> to the Syrian-Lebanese\u00c2\u00a0border: it wouldn&#8217;t take much to push them over the edge. As I wrote on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/justin\/?articleid=9371\">July 21<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Bashar al-Assad is a pincer movement away from being deposed. A right hook from U.S.-occupied Iraq and a left from the Israelis would knock out the last remaining Ba&#8217;athists &#8220;\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I see Antiwar.com blogger Margaret Griffis is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/01\/has-the-second-front-in-the-war-already-materialized\/\">on the case<\/a> &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: An Israeli airborne commando unit has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/latest\/200608020919\/1986a96a\">dropped<\/a> into Baalbeck, about 12 miles from the Syrian border. CNN reports they have taken control of a Hezbollah hospital:\u00c2\u00a0 Israeli special ops are said to have checked the identification papers of all medical personnel and patients, supposedly looking for a &#8220;high value&#8221; target, perhaps a member of Hezbollah&#8217;s &#8220;shura&#8221; or high command.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playfuls.com\/news_00000001931_Israel_Captures_Terrorists_In_North_eastern_Lebanon.html\">This report<\/a>, however, claims that the raid was prompted by a belief that the two captured Israeli soldiers &#8212; remember them? &#8212; were being held there:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The Israeli army confirmed Wednesday that paratroopers landed in helicopters near the city Baalbeck in north-eastern Lebanon and that a number of &#8216;terrorists&#8217; were taken prisoner.\u00c2\u00a0The prisoners were brought to Israel and &#8220;all soldiers returned to to their base in Israel&#8221; without any casualties, said an Israeli army spokeswoman without giving further details of the overnight raid.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;&#8230;\u00c2\u00a0Lebanese security sources said that reports from the area suggested that Israeli troops were pursuing suspicions that two abducted Israeli soldiers were being held or treated inside the hospital.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So they&#8217;re sending more troops to Iraq, and of course the ostensible reason is to help quell the ever-spreading insurgency, with their purported destination said to be Baghdad.
