{"id":3015,"date":"2006-09-29T08:23:27","date_gmt":"2006-09-29T15:23:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/29\/happy-dictatorship-day\/"},"modified":"2006-09-29T08:23:27","modified_gmt":"2006-09-29T15:23:27","slug":"happy-dictatorship-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/29\/happy-dictatorship-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Dictatorship Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The prize for the headline of the year goes to today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Washington Post<\/em> for the following gem:<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/09\/28\/AR2006092801763_pf.html\">Many Rights in U.S. Legal System Absent in New Bill<\/a><\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The Post article on the military tribunal bill the Senates passed yesterday\u00c2\u00a0 details some of the legal and procedural rights that people seized as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153enemy combatants\u00e2\u20ac\u009d will not possess.\u00c2\u00a0 (Amnesty International has a good summary of the bill <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/web.amnesty.org\/library\/index\/ENGAMR511542006\">here<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post<\/em> article gives the impression that only aliens have to fear being treated\u00c2\u00a0 slightly better than East Bloc dissidents. But as a superb piece in yesterday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<em> Los Angeles Times<\/em> by law professor Bruce Ackerman noted, the legislation \u00e2\u20ac\u0153authorizes the president to seize American citizens as enemy combatants, even if they have never left the United States.
