But now, in the interest of fairness, I must issue a consumer alert for <em>pro<\/em>-war Cato donors: you aren&#8217;t getting your money&#8217;s worth either. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cato-at-liberty.org\/2006\/10\/02\/logic-is-not-the-enemy-lets-be-kind-to-it\/\">Example<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is never the <em>waging<\/em> of wars that makes you safer, only the <em>winning<\/em> of them.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. was not safer in 1942\u00e2\u20ac\u201c1945 than it had been in early 1941. We entered World War II because <em>winning<\/em> it would make America safer. In trying to win it, we suffered over a million casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the argument for toppling Saddam Hussein\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s regime was that a beachhead for freedom and democracy in a Muslim Middle Eastern nation would, in the long term, weaken militant Islamism and promote peace. It was never suggested that <em>the process of trying to create that beachhead<\/em> would itself make anyone safer \u00e2\u20ac\u201d no more than it was suggested that Americans would be safer <em>during<\/em> our participation in WW II.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, it is fatuous to argue that a current rise in terrorist recruitment proves that toppling Saddam was a bad idea. Efforts to create a free and democratic Iraq are ongoing \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the war is still in progress.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That is, <em>what has actually happened<\/em> since the war began doesn&#8217;t matter, because what war supporters said <em>would<\/em> happen <em>could<\/em> theoretically still happen \u00e2\u20ac\u201c kind of; we may have to accept defeat in the<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rotten.com\/library\/history\/war\/wmd\/saddam\/\"> scavenger hunt<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/wp-dyn\/A1996-2002Feb12?language=printer\">cakewalk<\/a> events \u00e2\u20ac\u201c as long as we keep trying to make it happen.
