Adam Smith Backtracks on Support for NDAA Amendment to End War in Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the leading co-sponsors of an amendment to the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would end US support for Saudi Arabia\u2019s war on Yemen appears to be withdrawing his support.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) <a HREF=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/dia\/track.jsp?key=-1&amp;url_num=2&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Ftime_continue%3D2681%26v%3DznJ7j7snShg\">spoke at an American Enterprise Institute event<\/a> on Thursday. When Smith took a question about his efforts to end US support for the war, he said, &quot;There is nothing we are going to pass in Congress that\u2019s going to stop the war in Yemen.&quot; Smith said Iran\u2019s involvement in the war cannot be ignored and that he does not want to &quot;cut off Saudi Arabia\u2019s and UAE\u2019s ability to deal with Iran.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>In April, President Trump <a HREF=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-47958014\">vetoed a bipartisan effort<\/a> to end US support for the war in Yemen. In June, Trump <a HREF=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-49106989\">vetoed resolutions<\/a> that would have blocked arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. <a HREF=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sanders-khanna-welcome-call-by-senior-obama-officials-to-defund-illegal-yemen-war\">Experts agree<\/a> that the best way to end the war in Yemen is through this amendment to the NDAA.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Smith said the legislation Congress passed has already put pressure on Saudi Arabia to limit their involvement in the war, and that they have &quot;gotten a little better&quot; in their efforts to limit civilian deaths. <a HREF=\"https:\/\/news.antiwar.com\/2019\/10\/17\/september-deadliest-month-for-yemen-civilians-but-un-sees-hope\/\">The UN found<\/a> that a total of 388 civilians were killed or injured in September, airstrikes hit mosques, civilian homes, and even a UN water system.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.
