{"id":3501,"date":"2007-05-04T06:41:25","date_gmt":"2007-05-04T13:41:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/04\/3501\/"},"modified":"2007-05-04T07:00:29","modified_gmt":"2007-05-04T14:00:29","slug":"3501","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/04\/3501\/","title":{"rendered":"Reading the Playbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The spin on the GOP debate last night is just getting up to speed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/blog\/show\/120003.html\">Here<\/a>&#8216;s good ol&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/staff\/show\/176.html\">David Weigel<\/a> of <em>Reason<\/em> magazine,<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ron Paul is asked why everyone on stage was wrong about the war, and Paul sticks to &#8216;a policy of non-intervention.&#8217; He&#8217;s a bit loud, but more concise than usual: &#8216;Think of how Eisenhower won the Korean War, think of how Nixon was elected to end the mess in Vietnam.&#8217; Basically he reads the paleocon playbook much more clearly than anyone expected.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Paleocon<\/em> playbook&#8221;? Uh, Dave &#8212; that&#8217;s the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/orig\/rothbard_on_war.html\">libertarian <\/a><\/em>playbook he was reading from, but, then again, it&#8217;s totally understandable you didn&#8217;t get that, working for <em>Reason<\/em> magazine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/news\/show\/28646.html\">and<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reason.com\/news\/show\/34067.html\">all<\/a>. I mean, without calling for the legalization of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?as_q=methamphetamine+speed+&#038;hl=en&#038;num=10&#038;btnG=Google+Search&#038;as_epq=&#038;as_oq=&#038;as_eq=&#038;lr=&#038;as_ft=i&#038;as_filetype=&#038;as_qdr=all&#038;as_nlo=&#038;as_nhi=&#038;as_occt=any&#038;as_dt=i&#038;as_sitesearch=reason.com&#038;as_rights=&#038;safe=images\">methamphetamine <\/a>in the same breath, Paul&#8217;s antiwar stance is plainly incoherent &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Those warmongers over at <em>National Review<\/em> know better than that, however. <a href=\"http:\/\/article.nationalreview.com\/?q=ZTExNWI1YjM4MjhhY2NlODcxYTZiNmI2YjU2ZDdhMTM=\">Here<\/a>&#8216;s James S. Robbins on Paul&#8217;s performance:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Taken in aggregate the candidates presented a coherent if superficial national-security policy. Yes, there was Rep. Ron Paul, one of the six congressional Republicans who voted against the war in Iraq, repeating his perennial <strong>non-interventionist libertarian<\/strong> position.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What kind of a world is it when <em>National<\/em> F***ing <em>Review<\/em> knows what the libertarian position is on invading and conquering a country, and killing <a href=\"http:\/\/commentisfree.guardian.co.uk\/richard_horton\/2006\/10\/post_499.html\">650,000<\/a> of its people, and &#8220;Reason&#8221; magazine is utterly clueless?<\/p>\n<p>Why, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/justin\/j021302.html\">Bizarro World<\/a>, of course &#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The spin on the GOP debate last night is just getting up to speed.
