Be it through Zoom or spaced six feet apart from ten or less loved ones at backyard cookouts, folks will find a way. In these peculiar gatherings, is it still considered cynical to wonder if people will spare much <em>actual <\/em>thought for American soldiers still dying abroad\u2014or question the utility of America\u2019s forever wars? Etiquette aside, we think it\u2019s obscene not to.  <\/p>\n<p>Just as the coronavirus has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2020\/05\/01\/romance-new-realism-eugene-debs-and-age-corona\">exposed <\/a>systemic rot, this moment also reveals how obsolete common conceptions of U.S. warfare truly are\u2014raising core questions about the holiday devoted to its sacrifices. The truth is that today\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/405440\">way of war<\/a>\u201d is so abstract, distant, and short on (at least American) casualties as to be nearly invisible to the public. With little to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2020\/01\/27\/the-american-chaos-machine-us-foreign-policy-goes-off-the-rails_partner\/\">show <\/a>for it, Washington still directs bloody global campaigns, killing thousands of locals. America has no space on its calendar to memorialize <em>these <\/em>victims: even the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/24\/world\/asia\/afghanistan-civilian-casualties-united-nations.html\">children <\/a>among them.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen years ago, as a cadet and young marine officer, we celebrated the first post-9\/11 Memorial Day\u2014both brimming with enthusiasm for the wars we knew lay ahead. In the intervening decades, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/articles\/officers-path-dissent\/\">individual <\/a>yet strikingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortressonahill.com\/2018\/01\/01\/part-1-interview-matthew-hoh\/\">similar <\/a>reasons, we ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/matthew-hoh-resigns-us-strategy-afghanistan\/story?id=8924500\">chose <\/a>paths of dissent. Since then, we\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/memorials-to-purposelessn_b_823984\">penned <\/a>critical editorials around Memorial Days. These challenged the wars\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/yes-my-fellow-soldiers-died-in-vain\/\">prospects<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truthdig.com\/articles\/devils-bargain-ditching-draft-enabling-forever-war\/\">questioned <\/a>the efficacy of the volunteer military, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-sjursen-memorial-day-war-iraq-afghanistan-20190527-story.html\">encouraged <\/a>citizens to honor the fallen by creating fewer of them.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2020\/05\/memorial-day-combat-veterans-op-ed-war\/\">Read the rest of the article<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Mother Jones: Pandemic or no, resilient Americans will celebrate Memorial Day together.
