{"id":3568,"date":"2007-05-17T00:42:41","date_gmt":"2007-05-17T07:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/17\/david-gergen-and-the-8th-circle-of-hell\/"},"modified":"2007-05-17T01:30:30","modified_gmt":"2007-05-17T08:30:30","slug":"david-gergen-and-the-8th-circle-of-hell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/17\/david-gergen-and-the-8th-circle-of-hell\/","title":{"rendered":"David Gergen and the 8th Circle of Hell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of all the smears and epithets directed at Ron Paul by the Giuliani camp and the neocons (or do I repeat myself?), the sleaziest was <a href=\"http:\/\/campaignsandelections.com\/sc\/releases\/index.cfm?ID=569\">upchucked<\/a> by professional opportunist and political chameleon\u00c2\u00a0David Gergen, appearing on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;Anderson Cooper 360&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<em>&#8220;I think Rudy Giuliani won the night &#8230; [Giuliani] seized a moment when <strong>Ron Paul sort of opened up this argument that maybe we had it coming, with 9\/11<\/strong> and Giuliani just jumped into the debate, he disrupted the debate. To just say no, no, that&#8217;s not right and I just don&#8217;t agree with that. &#8230; [I]t was like a minor Nashua moment when Ronald Reagan, you know, seized the microphone, there was a quality here about showing his sort of, not only his anger but strength that I think served him well tonight.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ron Paul said no such thing, as is shown <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/items\/200705160009?f=h_latest\">here<\/a>, but that hasn&#8217;t stopped the Smear Machine from churning out lies.\u00c2\u00a0To say that US government policies in the Middle East provided grist for Osama bin Laden&#8217;s mill is <em>not<\/em> to say that the 3,000-plus people he murdered &#8220;had it coming,&#8221; as Gergen put it.<\/p>\n<p>Gergen, the\u00c2\u00a0sometime <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/clinton\/interviews\/gergen.html\">Clintonite<\/a>, is,\u00c2\u00a0perhaps, awaiting the call to join Rudy&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0inner circle of advisors, where he&#8217;ll take his place alongside <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2007\/03\/31\/bernie-kerik-facing-multiple-felonies\/\">Bernie<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/direland.typepad.com\/direland\/2004\/12\/hes_out_bernie_.html\">Kerik<\/a>.
