{"id":3650,"date":"2007-06-13T16:14:12","date_gmt":"2007-06-13T23:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/13\/the-war-on-pabst\/"},"modified":"2007-06-13T16:14:12","modified_gmt":"2007-06-13T23:14:12","slug":"the-war-on-pabst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/13\/the-war-on-pabst\/","title":{"rendered":"The War on Pabst"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this selection from &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/rothbard\/rothbard156.html\">World War I As Fulfillment: Power and the Intellectuals<\/a>,&#8221; Murray Rothbard connected the\u00c2\u00a0moralistic\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prohibitionism\">prohibitionism<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0of the early &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/anderson\/anderson132.html\">progressives<\/a>&#8221; with the militaristic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/rothbard\/rothbard80.html\">world-saving<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/rothbard\/rothbard100.html\">spirit <\/a>of Wilsonian internationalism in a way that made me laugh out loud:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The Anti-Saloon League thundered that &#8216;German brewers in this country have rendered thousands of men inefficient and are thus crippling the Republic in its war on Prussian militarism.&#8217; Apparently, the Anti-Saloon League took no heed of the work of German brewers in Germany, who were presumably performing the estimable service of rendering &#8216;Prussian militarism&#8217; helpless. The brewers were accused of being pro-German, and of subsidizing the press (apparently it was all right to be pro-English or to subsidize the press if one were not a brewer). The acme of the accusations came from one prohibitionist: &#8216;We have German enemies,&#8217; he warned, &#8216;in this country too.
