{"id":37351,"date":"2021-05-07T08:46:13","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T16:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=37351"},"modified":"2021-05-07T08:46:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T16:46:14","slug":"peace-activist-interrupts-general-dynamics-shareholder-meeting-to-blast-the-business-of-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2021\/05\/07\/peace-activist-interrupts-general-dynamics-shareholder-meeting-to-blast-the-business-of-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Peace Activist Interrupts General Dynamics Shareholder Meeting To Blast the Business of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Antiwar activism met corporate gaslighting Wednesday as General Dynamics CEO Phebe Novakovic refused to acknowledge the deadly consequences of her firm&#8217;s arms sales to Saudi Arabia and other nations after CodePink cofounder Medea Benjamin interrupted a company shareholder meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin attended the annual meeting in Reston, Virginia and <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/user-688114604\/medea-benjamin-disrupts-general-dynamics-shareholders-meeting\">calmly confronted<\/a> Novakovic about her company&#8217;s weapons sales to countries including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-generaldynamics-canada-saudi\/general-dynamics-canada-wins-saudi-deal-worth-up-to-13-billion-idUSBREA1D1EF20140214\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, the United Arab Emirates, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseworld.net\/news\/20623\/General_Dynamics_Wins__20_Million_to_Supply_MK_Bombs_To_Australia__Bahrain_and_Saudi_Arabia\">Bahrain<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedefensepost.com\/2018\/09\/18\/egypt-cleared-60500-tank-rounds-general-dynamics\/\">Egypt<\/a>. She specifically mentioned a March 25, 2016 Saudi-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2016\/04\/07\/american-bombs-killing-civilians-yemen-report-finds\">airstrike<\/a> that hit a crowded marketplace in the Yemeni village of Mastaba, killing scores of civilians.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How is it morally responsible to be engaged in a war in Yemen where now as a result of that war, every 75 seconds a child <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/yemen-heading-toward-biggest-famine-modern-history-wfp-chief-warns-un-security-council\">dies<\/a> from war and hunger?&#8221; Benjamin asked. &#8220;My heart goes out to the children of Yemen and I was wondering if you think about them as well, because while they are dying, people in this company are making profits off of them.&#8221; <\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">It&#8217;s not every day you get to directly confront the CEO of a major weapons company and ask how they feel about a business model that thrives on conflict, destruction, war and suffering. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kCHrn5r6PC\">https:\/\/t.co\/kCHrn5r6PC<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dMVaoqdjyQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/dMVaoqdjyQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Medea Benjamin (@medeabenjamin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/medeabenjamin\/status\/1390326065634086913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Novakovic replied by accusing Benjamin of spreading &#8220;potentially libelous and incorrect information&#8221; that is &#8220;born from a lack of knowledge.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s one of the things we should talk about, because the internet is full of misinformation, including the incident you cited at the marketplace,&#8221; the CEO said. &#8220;I am going to presume that you don&#8217;t know the facts, and we are perfectly willing to share them with you.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The facts, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2016\/04\/08\/yemen-us-bombs-used-deadliest-market-strike\">determined<\/a> by Human Rights Watch and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/07\/world\/middleeast\/report-ties-us-bombs-to-saudi-led-strike-that-killed-yemeni-civilians.html\">reported<\/a> by the <em>New York Times<\/em> and others, are that a General Dynamics MK-84 2,000-pound bomb was dropped on the Mastaba market, and that 97 civilians &#8211; 25 of them children &#8211; were identified as victims. Another 10 bodies were <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/yemen\/yemen-us-bombs-used-deadliest-market-strike\">burned beyond recognition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aQS7sxaXVw4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin pressed Novakovic on General Dynamics&#8217; sales to Saudi Arabia: &#8220;The Saudi regime is evil, and you provide them with weapons. Is there anything moral about supplying Saudi Arabia with weapons?&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Novakovic retorted that &#8220;we can define and we can debate who is evil and who is not but we do support the policy of the U.S. and I happen to believe\u2026 the policy of the US is just and fair.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>There is virtually universal agreement among rights advocates that Saudi Arabia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/world-report\/2021\/country-chapters\/saudi-arabia\">ruled<\/a> by one of the world&#8217;s most repressive regimes, and that the country&#8217;s human rights record is <a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/20-facts-about-human-rights-in-saudi-arabia\/\">among the world&#8217;s worst.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"block-inject-17\" class=\"block-inject block-inject-17\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<p>Benjamin also took aim at what many peace activists call the inherently immoral nature of the military-industrial complex, including the revolving door between the Pentagon and the private sector, as she faced a General Dynamics board whose members include former Defense Secretary James Mattis. <\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" xml:lang=\"en\">Former Defense Secretary James Mattis returns to General Dynamics&#8217; board of directors <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VCUb9Ig8qM\">https:\/\/t.co\/VCUb9Ig8qM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CNBC (@CNBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNBC\/status\/1159175269447622656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 7, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;If you have a model where you need global conflict, where you need wars in order to make money, I think there&#8217;s something fundamentally wrong with the company and you ought to have some more moral reflection about how you earn your billions of dollars,&#8221; Benjamin asserted. <\/p>\n<p>Novakovic replied that &#8220;our role is to support the US military and US national security policy and the preservation of peace and liberty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that and I believe that passionately,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We hope for peace, we pray for peace, we work for peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>General Dynamics was founded in 1952. The United States has been at war or engaged in military occupation or other foreign interventions <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/natsec\/R42738.pdf\">nearly every single year<\/a> (pdf) since then, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/04\/us-sells-more-than-175-billion-in-weapons-to-foreign-governments.html\">selling or giving<\/a> hundreds of billions of dollars worth of weaponry and other equipment to dozens of countries.<\/p>\n<p>As the United States continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/04\/26\/global-military-spending-grew-nearly-2-trillion-2020-despite-pandemic\">spend more on its military<\/a> than the next 10 countries combined &#8211; $778 billion in 2020 &#8211; executives at arms companies continue to enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/05\/04\/execs-top-pentagon-contractors-raked-2765-million-last-year-analysis-finds\">stupendous salaries<\/a> and bonuses. Benjamin took Novakovic to task for &#8220;personally making $21 million a year through a business model that thrives on conflict, death, and destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The worst thing for your company would be if peace breaks out in the Middle East,&#8221; Benjamin said, a possible reference to Raytheon Technologies CEO Greg Hayes&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/28\/saying-peace-not-going-break-out-anytime-soon-raytheon-ceo-sees-solid-growth-middle\">recent reassurance<\/a> to investors that the Biden administration&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/27\/good-anti-war-democrats-applaud-biden-freeze-us-arms-sales-saudis-and-uae\">temporary hold<\/a> on the sale of nearly half a billion dollars&#8217; worth of bombs to Saudi Arabia wouldn&#8217;t threaten profits. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look,&#8221; said Hayes, &#8220;peace is not going to break out in the Middle East anytime soon.
