The last time that a Haitian president was assassinated, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1914-1920\/haiti\">intervened militarily<\/a> and then occupied the country for the next 19 years. There is absolutely no good reason why the US should do anything like this again today, and I assumed that would be obvious to almost everyone, but we already have <em>The Washington Post <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/07\/07\/assassination-its-president-puts-haiti-risk-anarchy-un-must-intervene\/\">clamoring<\/a> for intervention this evening:<\/p>\n<p><i>Swift and muscular intervention is needed. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Post <\/em>prefers a U.N.-led intervention, but it goes without saying that a \u201cswift and muscular intervention\u201d in a country so close to the United States would almost certainly involve US forces if it were to happen at all. The editorial calls for a U.N. peacekeeping force, but knowing the abysmal record of UN peacekeepers in Haiti, including widespread sexual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-haiti-women-peacekeepers\/haitians-say-underaged-girls-were-abused-by-u-n-peacekeepers-idUSKBN1YM27W\">abuse<\/a> of young girls, that seems like an invitation for more abuses at the expense of the civilian population.
