{"id":3859,"date":"2007-09-10T10:24:07","date_gmt":"2007-09-10T17:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/10\/huckabee-nice-guy-or-slanderer-by-proxy\/"},"modified":"2007-09-10T16:46:13","modified_gmt":"2007-09-10T23:46:13","slug":"huckabee-nice-guy-or-slanderer-by-proxy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/10\/huckabee-nice-guy-or-slanderer-by-proxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Huckabee: Nice Guy, or Slanderer-by-proxy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkansasnews.com\/archive\/2007\/08\/30\/JohnBrummett\/343215.html\">conventional<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwanews.com\/adg\/Editorial\/199401\/\">wisdom<\/a> is that Mike Huckabee is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/20438237\/site\/newsweek\/\">Real<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/thecitizensjournalblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/huckabee-to-nice-to-be-president.html\">Nice Guy<\/a>, and his soft-spoken manner gives superficial credence to this assertion, and yet, like so much of the press corps groupthink that evolves over the course of a presidential campaign, it is a lot of malarkey: aside from his demagogic appeal to naked emotion over logic and facts in his contretemps with Ron Paul at the New Hampshire debate,\u00c2\u00a0Huckabee apparently leaves the dirtier smears to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashuatelegraph.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20070909\/COLUMNISTS12\/209090420\/-1\/opinion\">his local accomplices<\/a>, according to the Nashua, New Hampshire <em>Telegraph<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<em>&#8220;&#8216;That guy (Paul) is the most un-American person in this country as far as I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m concerned,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122&#8217; said Hudson Republican Sen. Robert Clegg, a big Huckabee backer.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Au contraire<\/em>, Senor Clegg, methinks you are the rightful bearer of that title: the Most Un-American Person in This Country Award is yours hands down.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of crap has got to stop: there <em>will <\/em>be a discussion of the war, and the foreign policy of this country, not\u00c2\u00a0only in the general election but in the primaries, too, and if that is &#8220;un-American&#8221; by comrade\u00c2\u00a0Clegg&#8217;s standards, then that&#8217;s just too damned bad, now, isn&#8217;t it?\u00c2\u00a0To call Ron Paul &#8220;un-American&#8221; because he opposes the Iraq war, and invokes a long Republican tradition of anti-interventionism in opposing our crazed foreign policy, is typical of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/rockwell\/red-state-fascism.html\">red-state fascist<\/a> drivel that passes for Republicanism these days &#8212; but, you&#8217;ll notice, it isn&#8217;t working. No one believes that the Good Doctor, a man who swears by the Constitution and is arguably the most conservative member of Congress, is an anti-American subversive &#8212; not even, I&#8217;d be willing to bet, Gov. Huckabee.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Huckabee is said to be a Real Nice Guy, at least that&#8217;s what the national press corps is telling us, and so now he faces a crucial test in the Nice-ness department: he ought to disavow Glegg&#8217;s mean-spirited smear, and acknowledge that Rep. Paul is as patriotic in his dissent as he, Huckabee, is sincere in his insistence that we must stay the course.<\/p>\n<p>How about it, Governor? Or is the nice-ness angle just another of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/justin\/?articleid=11570\">the Huckster<\/a>&#8216;s scams, like the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opinionjournal.com\/extra\/?id=110010523\">fair tax<\/a>&#8220;?<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gencourt.state.nh.us\/senate\/members\/senate14.asp\">here&#8217;s Senator Clegg&#8217;s contact information<\/a>, just in case you want to give him a piece of your mind:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Senate Office:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Statehouse<br \/>\n107 N.
