Bush by noting that three American presidents have come and gone without anyone being held accountable for the horrific crimes that have occurred there, while calling on the fourth &#8211; Joe Biden &#8211; to finally close what one advocate called an &#8220;indelible stain&#8221; on the nation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Four American presidents have overseen the facility and three have promised to close it,&#8221; the ACLU tweeted Tuesday. &#8220;Every day Guant&aacute;namo remains open is an affront to human rights, justice, and the rule of law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since 2002, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andyworthington.co.uk\/guantanamo-the-definitive-prisoner-list-part-1\/\">779 Muslim men and boys<\/a> have been held at Guant&aacute;namo, nearly all without charge or trial,&#8221; the ACLU continued.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to retired US Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to Bush-era Secretary of State Colin Powell, Bush, along with his vice president and defense secretary, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2013\/04\/former-state-department-official-team-bush-knew-many-at-gitmo-were-innocent\/275327\/\">knew<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/most-guantanamo-detainees-are-innocent-ex-bush-official-1.804550\">most<\/a> of the prisoners were innocent, but kept them locked up for political reasons.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Many of the remaining men are torture survivors. The CIA formerly disappeared some of them to \u201cblack sites\u201d before they were sent to Guantanamo. <\/p>\n<p> All of them have been exposed to the physical and psychological trauma associated with prolonged indefinite detention.<\/p>\n<p> &mdash; ACLU (@ACLU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACLU\/status\/1480903043289952256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, 39 men remain indefinitely detained,&#8221; noted the ACLU. &#8220;Twenty-seven have never been charged with a crime, and 14 of those prisoners have been cleared for transfer or release, some for years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In July 2021, the administration of Biden &#8211; who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/02\/12\/end-human-rights-atrocity-says-amnesty-after-biden-admin-signals-goal-close-gitmo\">signaled his intention<\/a> to close Guant&aacute;namo &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/07\/19\/39-men-still-remain-after-prisoner-released-biden-urged-close-gitmo-completely\">released<\/a> 56-year-old Abdul Latif Nasser after 19 years of detention and repatriated him to his native Morocco. However, the prison&#8217;s population did not increase under his tenure and in 2019 he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/19\/us\/politics\/trump-guantanamo.html\">said<\/a> his administration would search for alternatives to Guant&aacute;namo.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today 20yrs ago I watched in horror as I saw images of men kneeling in orange jumpsuits with their eyes, ears and mouths forcibly covered. Morris Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/archive\/rigged-trials-gitmo\/\">called<\/a> the &#8220;rigged&#8221; commission.<\/p>\n<p>As the US military slowly moves ahead with the commission proceedings, human rights advocates urge Biden to succeed where his predecessors failed and finally close Guant&aacute;namo once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Biden, keep your campaign promise to put the brutal legacy &#8211; torture, detention without charges or trial &#8211; of Guant&aacute;namo Bay detention center behind us,&#8221; Marcy Winograd of the women-led peace group CodePink <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcywinograd\/status\/1480927973251465226\">tweeted<\/a>, while calling on the president to appoint a special State Department envoy to close this hellhole.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Biden needs to fulfill his pledge to finally end this shameful chapter of American history,&#8221; the ACLU <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ACLU\/status\/1480903052160913409\">asserted<\/a>. &#8220;He can do this by ending indefinite military detention and the unconstitutional military commissions system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">GITMO remains open to this day.
