Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) &#8211; who heads the Congressional Progressive Caucus &#8211; and Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/world\/yemen-wars-power-resoultion\/\"> wrote<\/a> in <em>The Nation<\/em>. &#8220;If the administration refuses to act, Congress will force them to. In advance of the seventh anniversary of this war, we will work with our colleagues in Congress to pass a new Yemen War Powers Resolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our aim is clear: to reassert Congress&#8217;s constitutional war powers authority, terminate unauthorized US involvement in this endless war, reinvigorate diplomatic efforts, and ease this devastating humanitarian disaster,&#8221; they continued. &#8220;American complicity has persisted in this conflict for too long &#8211; now it&#8217;s time for Congress to act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Progressive groups welcomed the lawmakers&#8217; resolve, with DemandProgress <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/demandprogress\/status\/1490716645765128194\">tweeting<\/a> that &#8220;a war powers resolution is the best way to end ALL unauthorized US support for the devastating Saudi-UAE-led war on Yemen. It&#8217;s time for Congress to reclaim its authority over war!&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Want to help amplify the calls for Congress to end U.S. complicity in the world&#39;s worst humanitarian crisis?<\/p>\n<p> Take action here and urge your lawmakers to pass a Yemen War Powers Resolution! ?? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qe3DSZ4hc7\">https:\/\/t.co\/qe3DSZ4hc7<\/a><\/p>\n<p> &mdash; FCNL (Quakers) (@FCNL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FCNL\/status\/1490710058757459972?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 7, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers noted some of the war&#8217;s grim realities: indiscriminate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/01\/21\/saudi-bombings-kill-scores-civilians-including-children-yemen\">airstrikes<\/a> that have killed thousands of civilians; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/28\/un-envoy-warns-threat-civilian-lives-increasing-yemen\">destruction<\/a> of vital infrastructure; a crippling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/22\/aoc-leads-demand-biden-work-ending-saudi-blockade-crucial-yemen-airport\">blockade<\/a> on Yemen&#8217;s ports that has restricted access to food, fuel, and medicines and has exacerbated a crisis in which 16 million Yemenis are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/01\/14\/famine-not-seen-40-years-un-warns-pompeo-decision-yemen-could-lead-hundreds\">on the edge of starvation<\/a> and over two million children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/02\/12\/yet-another-cry-help-un-report-warns-millions-yemeni-children-face-acute\">suffer<\/a> from acute malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Jayapal and Fazio continued: <\/p>\n<p><i>A year ago last week, President Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/02\/04\/day-peace-activists-have-been-waiting-biden-vows-curb-us-support-saudi-led-war-yemen\">announced<\/a> that he would withdraw US support from the Saudi-led coalition&#8217;s &#8220;offensive&#8221; operations in Yemen. This suggested there would be dramatic decreases in military logistical support and arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Yet the exact opposite has occurred. Last year, the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/02\/new-report-urges-biden-stop-arms-sales-fueling-saudi-devastation-yemen\">provided<\/a> over $1 billion in weaponry to Saudi Arabia, and the US continues to provide logistical support that is essential to the Saudi air force&#8217;s deadly bombings.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since 2015, the United States has directly participated in this war without authorization from Congress,&#8221; the lawmakers wrote. &#8220;This is in clear violation of Article I of the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which grants Congress the power to declare war and authorize US military involvement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The disturbing truth,&#8221; they added, &#8220;is that the United States, through its military involvement in the Saudi-led coalition&#8217;s war against the Houthis in Yemen, has been directly participating in this horrific war for too long.
