Pape is Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago specializing in international security affairs. His publications include <em>Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism<\/em> (Random House 2005); <em>Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War<\/em> (Cornell 1996), \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Why Economic Sanctions Do Not Work,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>International Security<\/em> (1997), \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Determinants of International Moral Action,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>International Organization<\/em> (1999); \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>American Political Science Review<\/em> (2003); and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Soft Balancing against the United States,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>International Security<\/em> (2005). His commentary on international security policy has appeared in <em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <em>New Republic<\/em>, <em>Boston Globe<\/em>, <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, and <em>Bulletin of Atomic Scientists<\/em>, as well as on <em>Nightline<\/em>, <em>ABC News<\/em>, <em>CBS News<\/em>, <em>CNN<\/em>, <em>Fox News<\/em>, and <em>National Public Radio<\/em>. Before coming to Chicago in 1999, he taught international relations at Dartmouth College for five years and air power strategy for the USAF\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s School of Advanced Airpower Studies for three years. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1988 and graduated <em>summa cum laude<\/em> and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pittsburgh in 1982.
