{"id":4022,"date":"2007-10-31T03:43:10","date_gmt":"2007-10-31T10:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/01\/the-key-to-mid-east-peace-is-already-in-the-lock\/"},"modified":"2008-05-20T05:15:26","modified_gmt":"2008-05-20T12:15:26","slug":"the-key-to-mid-east-peace-is-already-in-the-lock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/31\/the-key-to-mid-east-peace-is-already-in-the-lock\/","title":{"rendered":"The key to mid-east peace is already in the lock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Does the world face what some style as Armageddon because American pro-Israel groups still believe out-dated Israeli &#8220;<em>public relations<\/em>&#8220;?<\/p>\n<p>According to Ha&#8217;aretz chief political columnist AKIVA ELDAR in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/article.pl?sid=07\/10\/08\/1341205\">October 8, 2007 Democracy Now! interview<\/a>, while the Israel lobby is &#8220;<em>a very important instrument in order to pursue Israel&#8217;s policy<\/em>&#8230; <em>they&#8217;re a little bit behind the Israeli government and the Israeli people<\/em>.&#8221;  He clarifies: &#8220;<em>We have seventy out of 120 members of the Knesset who support a two-state solution based on the &#8217;67 lines<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then what&#8217;s the problem?<\/p>\n<p>Says Eldar, &#8220;&#8230;<em>if for forty years, you tell the [American] Jewish community that Israel cannot afford to give up the territories, they are important for Israel&#8217;s security, just overnight to tell [them], &#8216;Sorry, we were wrong. Now, we don&#8217;t need those territories,&#8217; &#8230;It&#8217;s very difficult. I think that we are paying the price of having our PR doing a very good job for many years<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The continuing &#8220;<em>Palestinian problem<\/em>&#8221; then, the core problem in the middle east which underpins the others according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usip.org\/isg\/iraq_study_group_report\/report\/1206\/index.html\">The Iraq Study Group<\/a>, Jimmy Carter and others, may be laid on the doorstep of too-effective Israeli &#8220;<em>public relations<\/em>,&#8221; especially as applied to the United States.  <\/p>\n<p>So the neocons, AIPAC, their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/justin\/j012403.html\">amen corner<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/utley\/?articleid=11840\">other assorted groups<\/a>, riding Israel&#8217;s coatails on to what some style Armageddon, are clutching a coat the bulk of Israeli society is no longer wearing.<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s an underlying anchoring sub-problem: As many Israelis have noted, it&#8217;s much easier for Israelis to criticize Israel and the Israeli government than it is for Americans and American Jews &#8212; who are likely labeled &#8220;<em>anti-semitic<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<em>self-hating jews<\/em>&#8221; &#8212; even <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/news\/article\/2462\/depaul-rejects-tenure-bid-by-finkelstein-and-says-dershowitz-pressure-played-no-ro%20le\">have their livelihoods destroyed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This roadblock to free and open discussion here in the United States endangers not only those men, women, and children living in the middle east, but people throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>So, the key to mid-east peace is already in the lock.
