{"id":40260,"date":"2022-07-18T11:18:47","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T19:18:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=40260"},"modified":"2022-07-18T11:18:47","modified_gmt":"2022-07-18T19:18:47","slug":"remember-abu-ghraib-mbs-tells-biden-when-pressed-on-khashoggi-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/18\/remember-abu-ghraib-mbs-tells-biden-when-pressed-on-khashoggi-report\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Remember Abu Ghraib,&#8217; MbS Tells Biden When Pressed on Khashoggi: Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly told President Joe Biden during their meeting in Jeddah Friday that while the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi is &#8220;regrettable,&#8221; U.S. hands are not clean and other journalists are killed with impunity.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Salman specifically mentioned the torture scandal at the US military prison at Abu Ghraib, Iraq and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/11\/blatant-murder-al-jazeera-accuses-israel-killing-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh\">killing<\/a> of Palestinian-American <em>Al Jazeera<\/em> reporter Shireen Abu Akleh by Israeli forces in May, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/News\/gulf\/2022\/07\/16\/All-legal-measures-taken-over-Khashoggi-killing-Saudi-Crown-prince-to-Biden\">according to <\/a><em>Al Aribiya<\/em>, which is owned by the Saudi government.<\/p>\n<p>The de facto Saudi ruler also said that the CIA &#8211; which along with other American intelligence agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/11\/16\/happy-gobble-whatever-saudis-say-trump-skeptical-cia-determination-crown-prince\">concluded<\/a> that Khashoggi&#8217;s gruesome 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/10\/16\/gruesome-new-details-khashoggi-murder-emerge-trump-obediently-bows-saudi-crown\">murder<\/a> was likely ordered by bin Salman &#8211; makes mistakes, as it did when it <a href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive2.gwu.edu\/NSAEBB\/NSAEBB129\/index.htm\">falsely claimed<\/a> Iraq had an active weapons of mass destruction program prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion and occupation.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bin Salman&#8217;s smarmy reply underlines the way in which the US government&#8217;s lawlessness in misadventures like invading Iraq and its weird commitment to Israeli apartheid practices against the Palestinians undermine its moral standing to argue for &#8216;a rules-based global order,'&#8221; <em>Informed Comment <\/em>publisher Juan Cole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juancole.com\/2022\/07\/whitewashed-israeli-khashoggi.html\">observed<\/a>. &#8220;Almost no one in the US dares say this, but for the rest of the world it is a commonplace insight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Saudi official gives MBS&#39;s response to Biden when he asked about Khashoggi. &quot;You can&#39;t impose your values on us by force. (@iyad_elbaghdadi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iyad_elbaghdadi\/status\/1548211685684436993?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Cole wrote:<\/p>\n<p><i>The US government didn&#8217;t care about the Israelis assassinating Shireen Abu Akleh, (and many other unlawful killings of Palestinian journalists and just ordinary Palestinian noncombatants) and it does not stop the US from forking over to Israel $4 billion a year in foreign aid, a tax on all Americans in support of Greater Israel expansionism. So why should Biden, bin Salman wants to know, boycott Saudi Arabia over the killing of a single journalist?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Biden has come under fire from progressives for his willingness to sideline Saudi Arabia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/saudi-arabia-human-rights-raif-badawi-king-salman\">abysmal<\/a> human rights record and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/10\/08\/saudi-arabia-accused-sabotaging-un-probe-war-crimes-yemen\">war crimes<\/a> in Yemen in service of US <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6196794\/biden-saudi-arabia-trip-russia\/\">strategic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/07\/16\/biden-saudi-arabia-oil-gas-prices\/10049882002\/?gnt-cfr=1\">energy<\/a> interests.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing Sunday on <em>ABC<\/em>&#8216;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) &#8211; who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/07\/14\/sanders-unveils-resolution-end-us-support-catastrophic-saudi-led-war-yemen\">co-sponsoring<\/a> a new resolution to end US involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/sanders-manchin-intentionally-sabotaging-presidents-agenda\/story?id=86941518\">said<\/a> he did not think Biden should have visited Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Sen.
