{"id":40672,"date":"2022-09-17T08:17:33","date_gmt":"2022-09-17T16:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=40672"},"modified":"2022-09-17T08:17:33","modified_gmt":"2022-09-17T16:17:33","slug":"chile-refuses-israeli-ambassador-over-killing-of-palestinian-teen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/17\/chile-refuses-israeli-ambassador-over-killing-of-palestinian-teen\/","title":{"rendered":"Chile Refuses Israeli Ambassador Over Killing of Palestinian Teen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Human rights defenders on Friday welcomed a move by Chile&#8217;s progressive president to put off accepting the new Israeli ambassador&#8217;s credentials in response to the killing of a Palestinian teenager earlier in the day.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Chilean Foreign Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/world\/articles\/2022-09-16\/israel-to-reprimand-chile-for-snubbing-its-new-ambassador-to-santiago\">confirmed<\/a> to <em>Reuters<\/em> that the decision to delay a meeting between President Gabriel Boric and Israeli Ambassador Gil Artzyeli was made &#8220;because of the death of a minor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israeli occupation forces<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/9\/15\/israeli-forces-kill-palestinian-teen-in-occupied-west-bank-2\"> fatally shot <\/a>17-year-old Odai Trad Salah in the head during a Thursday morning raid in the village of Kufr Dan outside Jenin in the illegally occupied West Bank of Palestine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/chilean-president-refuses-accreditation-of-israeli-envoy-over-killing-of-palestinian-teenager\/\">According to <\/a><em>The Palestine Chronicle<\/em>, Artzyeli was inside the Chilean presidential palace awaiting his scheduled meeting with Boric when Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola informed him that his credentials would not be accepted that day, and that the formal ceremony would be delayed until next month.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ahmad al-Deek, an adviser to Palestine&#8217;s foreign ministry, said in a statement that &#8220;we welcome the Chilean president&#8217;s position, which is in line with international law and resolutions, and we appreciate this position aimed at applying pressure on the Israeli government to stop its ongoing daily crimes against our people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IsraelMFA\/status\/1570782165679640577\">calling<\/a> the snub &#8220;puzzling and unprecedented behavior&#8221; that &#8220;seriously harms the relations between the two countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East. The advocacy group Comunidad Palestina de Chile <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYC_prensa\/status\/1570560939501719555\">published<\/a> a statement Thursday saying it &#8220;highly values&#8221; the decision by Boric to postpone Artzyeli&#8217;s credential ceremony.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In August, Israel bombed civilians in Gaza, shut down Palestinian NGOs, and shot to death children in the WB. &quot;Puzzling&quot; behaviour is when ???? &amp; others take no action in response to these crimes, but continue business as usual. Bar Falah.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mondoweiss.net\/2022\/09\/17-year-old-palestinian-sixth-killed-by-israeli-forces-in-a-week\/\">According to<\/a> the anti-occupation news site <em>Mondoweiss<\/em>, six Palestinians, including four from the Jenin area, were killed by Israeli forces over the past week. Among those killed was 16-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dci-palestine.org\/israeli_forces_kill_16_year_old_palestinian_boy_in_beitin\">Haitham Hani Mohammad Mubarak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Palestine Chronicle<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinechronicle.com\/israeli-forces-injure-nine-palestinian-including-8-year-old-child-in-kafr-qaddum-video\/\">reports<\/a> at least nine Palestinians &#8211; including an 8-year-old child &#8211; were injured Friday as Israeli occupation forces attacked demonstrators taking part in a weekly protest against the expansion of an illegal Jewish settler colony in the village of Kafr Qaddum near Qalqiliya.
