Kennedy, who <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/00\/11\/26\/specials\/schlesinger-robert.html\">according to<\/a> close confidant and historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., wanted to unleash &#8220;the terrors of the Earth&#8221; on Cuba following Fidel Castro&#8217;s successful overthrow of a brutal U.S.-backed dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s vote was 185-2, with only the United States and Israel dissenting, and Ukraine and Brazil abstaining.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Biden administration talks about the need for a rules-based international order. Today&#8217;s UN vote clearly shows that the global community is calling on the US to lift its brutal embargo on Cuba,&#8221; CodePink cofounder Medea Benjamin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2022\/11\/03\/end-blockade-dc-rally-un-vote-and-shipment-food-and-medicines\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The United States is completely isolated in sustaining its 60-year embargo on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cuba?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cuba<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> In defiance of the international community&#39;s nearly unanimous will, the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Biden?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Biden<\/a> administration continues to block trade and travel.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LetCubaLive?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LetCubaLive<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ldFyqf802y\">https:\/\/t.co\/ldFyqf802y<\/a><\/p>\n<p> &mdash; Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA) (@masspeaceaction) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/masspeaceaction\/status\/1588204320570359811?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Benjamin added that US President Joe Biden &#8220;should respect global opinion&#8221; and return to former President Barack Obama&#8217;s &#8220;policy of normalizing relations with Cuba.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Manolo De Los Santos, co-executive chair of the People&#8217;s Forum, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/manolo_realengo\/status\/1588207777616388098\">wondered<\/a>, &#8220;What would Cuba be like today, if the blockade didn&#8217;t hinder its development?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is impossible to quantify the pain generated by power cuts, long queues to purchase food, the obstacles to the life projects of families, particularly young people,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Cuba has a right to live!&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Biden has faithfully applied the worst of Trump\u2019s 243 additional &amp; illegal sanctions on Cuba that make basic trade &amp; purchases of good nearly impossible. It\u2019s a deliberate act of violence whose only aim has been to strangle Cubans into submission.<\/p>\n<p> &mdash; Manolo De Los Santos (@manolo_realengo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/manolo_realengo\/status\/1588201043912859649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PaJ8GoHlF7U\">Speaking<\/a> before the UN General Assembly Thursday, Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Bruno Rodr&iacute;guez Parrilla noted that &#8220;more than 80% of the current Cuban population was born under the blockade,&#8221; which he called a &#8220;deliberate act of economic war&#8221; akin to &#8220;a permanent pandemic, a constant hurricane.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rodr&iacute;guez said that since then-President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/06\/16\/trump-set-take-backwards-step-cuba-policy\">rolled back<\/a> most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/issues\/foreign-policy\/cuba\">reforms<\/a> set in motion by Obama, the United States &#8220;has escalated the siege around our country, taking it to an even crueler and more inhuman dimension, with the purpose of deliberately inflicting the biggest possible damage on Cuban families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Taking aim at&nbsp; Biden, Rodr&iacute;guez added that &#8220;the current US administration does not have a policy of its own toward Cuba. This follows CodePink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/10\/30\/peace-groups-say-let-cuba-live-us-rallies-ahead-un-vote-anti-embargo-resolution\">protests<\/a> to #LetCubaLive in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. over the past several days.<\/p>\n<p>CodePink is set to cap a week of action Saturday by joining with the Cuban-American group Puentes de Amor to send a plane loaded with 8.5 tons of food and medicines to the besieged island.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Unfortunately,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codepink.org\/u_n_strongly_condemns_the_u_s_blockade_of_cuba\">said<\/a> CodePink Latin American coordinator Samantha Wherry, the shipment &#8220;represents a tiny gesture compared to the billions of dollars of harm caused by the US blockade.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The peace activists have three demands: An end to the US blockade, lifting of all travel and economic restrictions on Cuba, and removal of Cuba from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Successive US administrations backed a decades-long campaign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2018\/05\/28\/luis-posada-carriles-hemispheres-most-wanted-terrorist-dies-free-in-miami-at-age-90\/\">exile terrorism<\/a> against Cuba, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/the-bay-of-pigs\">attempted subversion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2006\/aug\/03\/cuba.duncancampbell2\">failed assassination attempts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigaraficionado.com\/article\/economic-war-against-cuba-7326\">economic warfare<\/a>, and covert operations <a href=\"https:\/\/nsarchive.gwu.edu\/briefing-book\/cuba\/2019-10-03\/kennedy-cuba-operation-mongoose\">large<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/dec\/11\/cuban-hip-hop-scene-infiltrated-us-information-youth\">small<\/a> in a fruitless policy of regime change.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a dozen US administrations have come and gone since the triumph of the Cuban revolution in 1959.<\/p>\n<p><i>Brett Wilkins is is staff writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/\">Common Dreams<\/a>.
