{"id":4152,"date":"2008-01-27T10:14:51","date_gmt":"2008-01-27T17:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/27\/media-bias-101\/"},"modified":"2008-01-27T10:14:51","modified_gmt":"2008-01-27T17:14:51","slug":"media-bias-101","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2008\/01\/27\/media-bias-101\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Bias, 101"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A lesson in media bias &#8212; the headline of the CNN International <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2008\/WORLD\/europe\/01\/27\/russia.election\/\">story<\/a> give us one narrative:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kremlin critic barred from election&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; And the body of the piece reports quite another:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Russia&#8217;s Central Election Commission disqualified one of Kremlin&#8217;s critics from the country&#8217;s presidential election Sunday, claiming that the signatures collected for his nominating petitions were forged, the state news agency said Sunday. &#8230; <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Kasyanov&#8217;s spokeswoman confirmed to CNN that he had been barred from running in the elections, scheduled for March 2. He will not appeal the decision, a representative told Interfax.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The headline tells us that\u00c2\u00a0Russia&#8217;s much-touted\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;backsliding&#8221; into\u00c2\u00a0totalitarianism is accelerating rather\u00c2\u00a0rapidly,\u00c2\u00a0while the\u00c2\u00a0facts, baldly stated, tell us that, for some reason, Kasyanov isn&#8217;t appealing the decision of the authorities to disqualify him, which leads us to wonder if the charges of forgery might be substantially true. Of course, forging signature on election petitions is quite illegal in the US, and would undoubtedly result in criminal charges.
