Bush, told members of the Jewish Democratic Council of America that the Biden administration should do more to try to prevent the Israeli government&#8217;s &quot;creeping annexation&quot; of the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Kurtzer specifically mentioned Israel&#8217;s recent &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/settlements-in-israel\">legalization<\/a>&quot; of nine Jewish-only settler outposts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem that are illegal even under Israeli law, an act he said dealt a major blow to peace.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s also a significant violation of a commitment that the Israeli government made in writing to the American government back in 2004 when, in a letter to the then Bush administration, Israel undertook to dismantle illegal outposts, illegal settlements,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A former US ambassador to Israel has accused Netanyahu\u2019s far-right government of &quot;breaking a written agreement with Washington by legalizing a group of hardline&#8230;settlements in the West Bank.&quot; He warns of Israel\u2019s \u201ccreeping annexation\u201d of the West Bank. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PxjlfVwXMP\">https:\/\/t.co\/PxjlfVwXMP<\/a><\/p>\n<p> &mdash; Kenneth Roth (@KenRoth) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenRoth\/status\/1629140915594973184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 24, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&quot;Now you&#8217;ve come full circle,&quot; Kurtzer added. &quot;Not only are they not dismantling these illegal outposts, but they&#8217;re trying to legalize them ex post facto. And there have been many that have been built since that time, so that the number is really quite significant.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Israel has steadily usurped more and more of the West Bank over the decades, using a combination of courts, troops, and apartheid settlers to seize and hold more land on which illegal colonies are built and expanded.<\/p>\n<p>During Netanyahu&#8217;s previous term as prime minister, his government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2020\/07\/01\/day-rage-palestinians-and-global-allies-rise-against-annexation-plan-and-israeli\">pursued plans<\/a> to annex up to a third of the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2019\/01\/chapter-3-israeli-settlements-and-international-law\/\">Under international law<\/a>, all Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land are illegal. While Israel offers every Jew in the world the right to settle in Israel, it has \u2013 against <a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/UNISPAL.NSF\/0\/805C731452035912852569D1005C1201\">U.N. resolutions<\/a> and international law \u2013 refused to allow the approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/palestine-refugees\">five million Palestinian refugees<\/a> alive today to return to their homeland.<\/p>\n<p>While successive American administrations have proclaimed their opposition to Israel&#8217;s construction and expansion of illegal settlements, U.S. military aid to Israel \u2013 currently at around $3.8 billion annually \u2013 has continued unabated and unimperiled regardless of Israeli policies and actions.<\/p>\n<p><i>Brett Wilkins is is staff writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/\">Common Dreams<\/a>.
