{"id":45718,"date":"2024-01-30T11:23:11","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T19:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=45718"},"modified":"2024-01-30T11:23:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T19:23:27","slug":"happy-birthday-dr-strangelove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2024\/01\/30\/happy-birthday-dr-strangelove\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Birthday, Dr. Strangelove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><i>Reprinted with permission from Greg Mitchell\u2019s Substack <a href=\"https:\/\/gregmitchell.substack.com\/\">Between Rock and a Hard Place<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week we celebrate the 60th birthday of<em> \u201cDr. Strangelove<\/em>,\u201d which debuted on January 29, 1964.\u00a0 The first preview screening had been set for Nov. 22, 1963, but&#8230;. well, you know.\u00a0 The premiere was then pushed back a bit.\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately, Kubrick&#8217;s president, the balding Milton Muffley (one of three roles for Peter Sellers), was more Ike than JFK.<\/p>\n<p>As a callow youth, I saw \u201cStrangelove\u201d in the theater and it instantly became my all-time favorite movie, and retained that position for many years. I would also say that it probably had the most influence on my career, since I went on to serve as editor of <em>Nuclear Times<\/em>, spent a month in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, wrote about The Bomb for dozens of leading publications and then in three books, and most recently wrote and directed a PBS film titled \u201cAtomic Cover-up.\u201d So that\u2019s\u2026a lot.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Also, in a bit of homage, a photo taken by Kubrick turns up in my latest PBS film, \u201cMemorial Day Massacre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So here are a few \u201cStrangelove\u201d-related highlights, including a couple of parodies.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the original trailer which was killed and not seen for decades.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1gXY3kuDvSU?si=tMJXXUW8KKkeAb-Z\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A Lego version of one scene:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rHAc9MKQOnc?si=Qauh2z492Hq9Ny50\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Homer Simpson rides The Bomb, a la Slim Pickens.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K10pdj5YOy0?si=W5r3DRGGv0rhWp9D\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMein Fuhrer, I can walk\u201d climax:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wxrWz9XVvls?si=E89mzRXVRs5rVxrJ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Parody trailer for a fun Oliver Stone re-make titled \u201cFluoridation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mMAzRMIfKxQ?si=5PBu-tliB4iMOZhY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Peter Sellers covers The Beatles \u201cShe Loves You\u201d in his Dr. S voice. Turgidson calls for all-out attack to catch Russkies \u201cwith their pants down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LNC0YwuGLqg?si=WMchIRKCYq7aj4Bc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gen. Ripper informs Mandrake about those \u201cprecious bodily fluids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0he-LZNzVg0?si=4DXtXhVipzGRFvnX\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the famously deleted final scene, the pie fight in the War Room.
