{"id":47039,"date":"2024-04-11T10:29:18","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T18:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/?p=47039"},"modified":"2024-04-11T10:29:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T18:29:18","slug":"do-the-right-thing-say-assange-defenders-as-biden-mulls-dropping-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.antiwar.com\/blog\/2024\/04\/11\/do-the-right-thing-say-assange-defenders-as-biden-mulls-dropping-case\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Do the Right Thing,&#8217; Say Assange Defenders as Biden Mulls Dropping Case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday said his administration is weighing the Australian government&#8217;s requests to drop charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has been deprived of his freedom since 2010 and is currently jailed in London&#8217;s notorious Belmarsh Prison while fighting extradition to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by reporters at the White House about <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/assange-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requests<\/a> from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and members of the country&#8217;s Parliament for the U.S. and United Kingdom to drop the extradition effort and charges against Assange \u2013 an Australian citizen \u2013 Biden said that &#8220;we&#8217;re considering it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stella Assange, Julian&#8217;s wife, responded to Biden&#8217;s remarks on social media. &#8220;Do the right thing,&#8221; she <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stella_Assange\/status\/1778091558216093948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. &#8220;Drop the charges. #FreeAssangeNOW.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Sre\u0107ko Horvat, a Croatian philosopher and co-founder of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 pan-European progressive political party, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HorvatSrecko\/status\/1778122216124678553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that &#8220;this would be the best decision Biden ever made.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>British journalist Afshin Rattansi <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/afshinrattansi\/status\/1778097297311625254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a>, &#8220;Why has Julian Assange been put through this ordeal in the first place?&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@POTUS<\/a> responds \u201cwe\u2019re considering it\u201d to a media question about Australia\u2019s request to drop the prosecution of Julian Assange, RSF reiterates our long-standing call on the Biden administration to drop these charges, close the case, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeAssange?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeAssange<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AYozIF1SzQ\">pic.twitter.com\/AYozIF1SzQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RSF (@RSF_inter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RSF_inter\/status\/1778120820675502191?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Assange \u2013 who is 52 years old and suffers from various health problems \u2013 faces multiple U.S. charges under the Espionage Act and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act for his role in publishing classified government documents, some of them revealing war crimes and other misdeeds. Among the files published by WikiLeaks are the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/collateralmurder.wikileaks.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Collateral Murder&#8221;<\/a> video \u2013 which shows a U.S. Army helicopter crew killing a group of Iraqi civilians \u2013 the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2010\/jul\/25\/afghanistan-war-logs-military-leaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Afghan<\/a> and <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2010\/oct\/22\/iraq-war-logs-military-leaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iraq war logs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three U.S. administrations have pursued charges against Assange. During the administration of former President Donald Trump \u2013 who is the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee \u2013 officials including then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/06\/spains-high-court-demands-pompeo-testify-alleged-plot-kidnap-or-kill-assange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allegedly<\/a> plotted to assassinate Assange to avenge WikiLeaks&#8217; publication of the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2017\/03\/07\/vault-7-cia-hacking-tools-revealed\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Vault 7&#8221;<\/a> documents exposing CIA electronic warfare and surveillance activities. In 2010, Trump <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/04\/politics\/kfile-trump-wikileaks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for<\/a> Assange&#8217;s execution.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. High Court <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/uk-high-court-assange-extradition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a> last month that Assange could not be immediately extradited to the U.S., where he faces up to 175 years behind bars if convicted on all counts. The tribunal gave the Biden administration until April 16 to guarantee that Assange won&#8217;t face the death penalty. Absent such assurance, Assange will be allowed to continue appealing his extradition.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Assange&#8217;s legal team <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/assange-plea-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied reports<\/a> that a plea deal with the U.S. government may have been in the works.<\/p>\n<p>Assange has been imprisoned in Belmarsh since 2019. In 2019, Nils Melzer, then the U.N.&#8217;s special rapporteur on torture, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2019\/11\/un-expert-torture-sounds-alarm-again-julian-assanges-lifemay-be-risk?LangID=E&amp;NewsID=25249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Assange had been subjected to &#8220;psychological torture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Following the High Court&#8217;s decision last month, <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/amnesty-international\">Amnesty International<\/a> legal adviser Simon Crowther <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/03\/uk-high-court-adjournment-of-appeal-leaves-julian-assange-and-all-media-workers-in-limbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that &#8220;the U.S. must stop its politically motivated prosecution of Assange, which puts Assange and media freedom at risk worldwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><i>Brett Wilkins is is staff writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/\">Common Dreams<\/a>.
