Muizzu&#8217;s office also said the president will appoint a special envoy &#8220;to assess Palestinian needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Muizzu will also launch a fundraising campaign &#8220;to assist our brothers and sisters in <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/palestine\">Palestine<\/a> with the help of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and to conduct a nationwide rally under the slogan &#8216;Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin,&#8217; which translates to &#8216;Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine,&#8217; to show support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The Maldives<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want your money with blood on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Israel \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf1 is a pariah nation committing genocide<\/p>\n<p>Follow the Maldives. There have been numerous well-attended pro-Palestine rallies in the Maldivian capital Male since October.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Maldives reaffirmed its intention to join the South Africa-led genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, with Muizzu&#8217;s office <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/presidency.gov.mv\/Press\/Article\/30725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accusing<\/a> the Israeli government and military of violating the Genocide Convention and causing &#8220;mass displacement, acute starvation, and blockage of humanitarian aid.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Palestinian and international officials, at least 36,479 Palestinians \u2013 mostly women and children \u2013 have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7, when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel and killed more than 1,100 people and kidnapped over 240 others. At least 82,777 other Palestinians have been wounded and an estimated 11,000 Gazans are missing and believed dead and buried beneath the rubble of hundreds of thousands of bombed-out building.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to last month&#8217;s <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/rafah-2668385266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">massacre<\/a> of dozens of Palestinian refugees in a Rafah tent encampment and the wider Israeli assault on Gaza&#8217;s southernmost city, the Maldivian government <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/foreign.gov.mv\/index.php\/en\/media-center\/statements\/statement-by-the-government-of-maldives-on-the-israeli-bombing-of-tents-sheltering-displaced-palestinians-in-rafah-2024-pr-121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that &#8220;such deliberate aggression and genocidal acts targeted against civilians are in gross violation of international humanitarian law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time the Maldives has banned Israeli travelers. The country&#8217;s government ended the previous ban in the early 1990s with an eye toward normalizing relations with Tel Aviv. However, normalization efforts were abandoned following the <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2012\/02\/08\/president-maldives-climate-crusader-ousted-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2012 coup<\/a> that ousted then-President Mohamed Nasheed.<\/p>\n<p>Maldivian government data show 528 Israelis <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/israel-recommends-that-its-citizens-avoid-maldives-2024-06-03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visited<\/a> the country \u2013 known for its pristine white sand beaches and stunning turqouise lagoons \u2013 during the first four months of 2024, a decrease from 4,644 during the same period last year. Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Maldives last year.<\/p>\n<p>Israel and many of its international supporters shrugged off the impending ban, with the Israeli government&#8217;s account on the social media platform X saying, &#8220;We&#8217;re good,&#8221; and one prominent Tel Aviv attorney <a class=\"rm-stats-tracked\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ostrov_A\/status\/1724142063778672943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scoffing<\/a>, &#8220;Maldives, Schmaldives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli Foreign Minister advised Sunday that citizens already in the Maldives should &#8220;consider leaving, because if they find themselves in distress for any reason, it will be difficult for us to assist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Israeli government, 10 other nations \u2013 Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, and Yemen \u2013 ban entry of Israeli passport holders.<\/p>\n<p><i>Brett Wilkins is is staff writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/\">Common Dreams<\/a>.
